Study of impurities in the Tandem Mirror Experiment using extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopy

Description: Impurities in the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) have been studied using extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy. Three time-resolving absolutely-calibrated normal-incidence monochromators, one on each section of TMX, were used to study the impurity emissions in the wavelength range of 300 A to 1600 A. The instruments on the east end cell and central cell were each capable of obtaining spatially-resolved profiles from 22 chords of the plasma simultaneously while the instrument on the west end cell mon… more

Hazardous waste operational plan for site 300

Description: This plan outlines the procedures and operations used at LLNL's Site 300 for the management of the hazardous waste generated. This waste consists primarily of depleted uranium (a by-product of U-235 enrichment), beryllium, small quantities of analytical chemicals, industrial type waste such as solvents, cleaning acids, photographic chemicals, etc., and explosives. This plan details the operations generating this waste, the proper handling of this material and the procedures used to treat or dis… more

Numerical simulations of mesoscale precipitation systems. Final progress report, 1 April-30 June 1981

Description: A numerical model designed for the study of mesoscale weather phenomena is presented. It is a three-dimensional, time-dependent model based upon a mesoscale primitive-equation system, and it includes parameterizations of cloud and precipitation processes, boundary-layer transfers, and ground surface energy and moisture budgets. This model was used to simulate the lake-effect convergence over and in the lee of Lake Michigan in late fall and early winter. The lake-effect convergence is created in… more

Liquid-phase methanation/shift process development. Final technical report, September 1, 1980-November 30, 1981

Description: This final technical report covers the work performed between September 1, 1980 and November 30, 1981 relating to Chem Systems' Liquid Phase Methanation/Shift Process. A total of 44 runs were completed covering testing of five commercially available catalysts at 900/sup 0/F, 1000 psig and 10,000 h/sup -1/ VHSV. The shifted methanation feed gas consisted of 63% H/sub 2/, 19% CO, 2% CO/sub 2/ and 16% CH/sub 4/. To determine the effects of steam, twenty of the scans had 15% steam injected into the… more

Hazardous-waste analysis plan for LLNL operations

Description: The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is involved in many facets of research ranging from nuclear weapons research to advanced Biomedical studies. Approximately 80% of all programs at LLNL generate hazardous waste in one form or another. Aside from producing waste from industrial type operations (oils, solvents, bottom sludges, etc.) many unique and toxic wastes are generated such as phosgene, dioxin (TCDD), radioactive wastes and high explosives. One key to any successful waste management… more

Coal-gasification-instrumentation program (PR 11734). Quarterly progress report, October 1, 1981-December 31, 1981

Description: Research programs involving coherent anti-Stokes Raman and infrared spectroscopy techniques to measure the concentrations of minority species in coal gasification streams are considered. Equipment modifications to improve the spectral quality (lower line widths), fundamental studies of spectral lines of gases of interest, detection limits and a study of possible interferences (including subtracting some of these) are presented. Some studies involve laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. This wor… more

Effect of chemistry variations on the weldability of commercially pure vanadium sheet

Description: Tensile tests and metallographic examinations were done on electron beam welds on six different chemistries of vanadium. The welds were found to maintain base metal strengths even though large grains were present in the fusion zone. Nitrogen and oxygen were found to be the most effective strengtheners. The weld and surrounding area in material containing high nitrogen and oxygen exhibited higher hardness than the base metal.

Power-grade butanol recovery and utilization

Description: As an alternative to the traditional recovery systems, it was proposed in a previous publication that the n-butanol/acetone/ethanol fermentation products could be recovered as a power grade fuel blend and used directly as a fuel. This would affect a savings in process energy requirements because each chemical component would not have to be processed individually to technical grade purity. Further, some residual water could be tolerated in the fuel blend. To develop such a power grade fuel recov… more

Design of the magnetized muon shield for the prompt-neutrino facility

Description: The main technical challenge in the design of the prompt neutrino beam is the magnetized muon shield. Two satisfactory alternate designs have been developed for such a shield during this past year and the background muon fluxes have been calculated by three independent programs at Columbia, Fermilab, and MIT. The background muon fluxes have been calculated to be satisfactory in all of the detectors that might use the beam. In Section III of this report we describe in detail the three Monte Carl… more
