Dissociation of H₂⁺ by Photons

Description: Abstract: "A measurement was made of the dissociation of vibrationally-excited H2+ ions by photons having quantum energy in the vicinity of 4 e.v. The calculated cross section from theory is 3 x 10-(-18) cm-2. The experimental result is 10-(-17) cm-2; a factor of 10 uncertainty is present because the photon intensity was unknown by that factor."

Transient Thermal Stresses in Pressure Vessels - Part I: Transient Temperature Distribution - Description of Computer Program

Description: This report describes an IBM 704 Computer program for the calculation of transient temperature distribution in axially symmetric solid or hollow bodies. It is the first part of Transient Thermal Stresses in Pressure Vessels. The present report mainly describes the use of the computer program and gives, for two problems, a comparison between computed and analytically known results. The analysis is reported briefly in this report.

Cascade Investigation of Cooling Characteristics of a Castfinned Air-Cooled Turbine Blade for Use in a Turboprop Engine

Description: Memorandum presenting an experimental investigation of the cooling characteristics of a small air-cooled turbine blade for use in a turboprop engine in a static cascade facility. Three test blades were studiued at three combustion-gas temperatures. Results regarding gas-flow conditions in cascade test section, correlation of temperature data, and application of correlated data to the typical engine are provided.

A Review of NACA Research Through 1954 on Boron Compounds as Fuels for Jet Aircraft (Project Zip)

Description: Report discussing a project to determine a high-energy fuel suitable for turbojet-powered aircraft. Components of the project include thermal and combustion properties, experiments with combustors using boron compounds, evaluation of boron fuels in full-scale turbojets with and without afterburners, and boron fuel use in ramjet flights. The most promising fuel found in the report is pentaborane.

In-Flight Gains Realized by Modifying a Twin Side-Inlet Induction System

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the effects of modifying a twin side-inlet duct system on an interceptor airplane as recorded and analyzed over an altitude range from about 25,000 to 51,000 feet throughout the transonic speed range to a Mach number of about 1.2. The modifications consisted primarily of redesigning the inlet lip, increasing the cross-sectional area of the inlet and diffuser, and adding a region of duct contraction ahead of the engine.

High Pressure Ejector Test

Description: A commercial jet ejector was operated over a range of pressures up to 1500 psi to determine its characteristics. The purpose of the test was to establish head-capacity and efficiency curves to serve as a guide in sizing much larger lets for high pressure applications. Presumably, larger jets would have similar characteristics except for flow rate. Water, circulated by a canned- rotor pump, was the motive fluid; the driven fluid was N gas. All tests were run at room temperature. Both gas head an… more

Hazards Summary Report for the Reflector-Control Critical-Assembly Experiments

Description: Critical experiments are described, and the hazards attpendant to these experiments are evaluated for a reflector-controllped boiling-peterogeneous- reactor design. The proposed reactor design is water moderated and reflected. However, to provide maximum flexibility and safety, the critical asspembly is a thermal reactor moderated and reflected with plastic having appropriate voids to simulate water. A spection of the plastic reflector is movable to represent changes in the waterrelector level.… more
