Review of Brookhaven National Laboratory superconducting power transmission program

Description: ABS>Research is being conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory to develop a superconducting ac cable system leading to the construction of a 1/2 mile model cable of 200 MVA capacity at Brookhaven and a cable of larger (>2000 MVA) capacity for test at a utility testing site. It is a coaxial cable of flexible design using Nb/sub 3/Sn superconductor, and a tape wound dielectric, helium impregnated, of a material yet to be determined. The research development is reported on the dielectric materi… more

Search for massive long lived particles in aluminum targets irradiated by 300 GeV and 400 GeV protons

Description: A directional gas Cherenkov counter, which employed six phototubes to sample Cherenkov light from single particles having a gamma greater than ~10 was used to achieve accidental rates of less than one per day if operated near targets with surface radiation levels of as high as 10/sup +3/ r/hr. The cosmic ray background measured by the apparatus was reduced to less than one per day by mounting our directional Cherenkov counter above the irradiated targets and facing toward the earth. Two searche… more

Encapsulation of ThO$sub 2$ in molybdenum liners via hot pressing

Description: Encapsulation of ThO/sub 2/ powder in molybdenum liners using hot pressing techniques was demonstrated. ThO/sub 2/ was used as a simulant for /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/. Five discs were hot pressed in an effort to establish die design and pressing parameters. Dies were designed to receive cups made of 0.005-in. or 0.031-in. molybdenum. Pressing temperatures of 1850 deg C and 1450 deg C were tried. A ThO/sub 2/ disc of 88% theoretical density was successfully hot pressed inside a cup fabricated from 0.… more
