Description: The impact of DOE's Current Federal Program on the commercialization of hydrothermal resources between 1980 and 2000 is analyzed. The hydrothermal resources of the United States and the types of DOE activities used to stimulate the development of these resources for both electric power and direct heat use are described briefly. ORNL: PWR-BDHT analysis procedure, a preliminary overview

Description: The computer programs currently used in the analysis of the ORNL-PWR Blowdown Heat Transfer Separate-Effects Program are overviewed. The current linkages and relationships among the programs are given along with general comments about the future directions of some of these programs. Thermal depletion of a geothermal reservoir with both fracture and pore permeability

Description: A method for estimating the useful lifetime of a reservoir in porous rock where the injection and production wells intersect a fracture system is presented. Equations were derived for the pore-fluid and fracture-fluid temperatures averaged over large regions of the geothermal field. Mound Laboratory tritium environmental study: 1976--1977

Description: In the course of an extensive investigation of tritium in the aquifer underlying the Mound Facility site, an unusual behavior was noted for a beta-emitting radionuclide contaminant present in the environs of the abandoned Miami-Erie Canal adjacent to the laboratory site. Uniform laser ablative acceleration of targets at 10/sup 14/ W/cm/sup 2/

Description: We present the first detailed investigations of the ablative acceleration of planar targets while simultaneously using high irradiance (10/sup 14/ W/cm/sup 2/), large focal diameters (1 mm) and long laser pulse duration (3 nsec). Included are measurements of target preheat, ablation pressures and uniformity achieved under these conditions. Targets were accelerated to high velocities with velocity profile uniformity approaching that required for high gain pellet implosions.

Pressure limits of negative ion sources based upon gas efficiency and extracted ion-current density

Description: The nature of the electrical discharge has an obvious impact upon the gas efficiency of an ion source and on the current density whch can be drawn from it. However external factors, such as the conductance of the grids and the background pressure along the beamline, also have an effect. SLAC Divertor Channel Entrance Thermal Stress Analysis

Description: X-ray beams emerging from the new SLAC electron-positron storage ring (PEP) impinge on the entrance to tangential divertor channels causing highly localized heating in the channel structure. Importance of high order momentum terms in SLC optics

Description: The evaluation of background levels at the SLC relies, in several cases, on the proper representation of how low momentum electrons propagate through the Arcs and the Final Focus System (FFS). CATASTROPHIC OXIDATION OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE ALLOYS

Description: The growth of nonprotective, crust-like oxide films was encountered in high-temperature alloy systems that contain molybdenum, vanadium, or tungsten as strengthening additions.
