Hanford site integrated pest management plan

Description: The Hanford Site Integrated Pest Management Plan (HSIPMP) defines the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) decision process and subsequent strategies by which pest problems are to be solved at all Hanford Site properties per DOE-RL Site Infrastructure Division memo (WHC 9505090). The HSIPMP defines the roles that contractor organizations play in supporting the IPM process. In short the IPM process anticipates and prevents pest activity and infestation by combining several strategies to achieve long… more

The Federal Helium Program: The Reaction Over an Inert Gas

Description: The CRS report describes the battle with natural gas companies on helium gas, being wasted, and released into the environment. Incentives were put in place for natural gas companies sell this helium to the government and for it to be stored in a government facility. Consequently, this also brought up controversy for why funding is being used to store a surplus of helium. Congress would debate on whether government involvement was the best option and a consensus was reached to fund the National … more

Consequence analysis of a NaOH solution spray release during addition to waste tank

Description: Toxicological consequences were calculated for a postulated maximum caustic soda (NaOH) solution spray leak during addition to a waste tank to adjust tank pH. Although onsite risk guidelines were exceeded for the unmitigated release, site boundary consequences were below the level of concern. Means of mitigating the release so as to greatly reduce the onsite consequences were recommended. Consequences for the mitigated release were estimated and both onsite and offsite consequences were found t… more

Proof-of-concept tests of the magnetohydrodynamic steam-bottoming system at the DOE Coal-Fired Flow Facility. Final report

Description: The development of coal-fired magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power can be viewed as consisting of two parts; the topping cycle and the bottoming cycle. The topping cycle consists of the coal combustor, MHD generator and associated components. The bottoming cycle consists of the heat recovery, steam generation, seed recovery/regeneration, emissions control (gas and particulate), ash handling and deposition, and materials evaluation. The report concentrates on the bottoming cycle, for which much of th… more

Testing of PVODE, a parallel ODE solver

Description: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the issues involved with, and the results from, testing of two example programs that use PVODE: pvkx and pvnx. These two programs are intended to provide a template for users for follow when writing their own code. However, we also used them (primarily pvkx) to do performance testing and visualization. This work was done on a Cray T3D, a Sparc 10, and a Sparc 5.

Design and implementation of a CO{sub 2} flood utilizing advanced reservoir characterization and horizontal injection wells in a shallow shelf carbonate approaching waterflood depletion

Description: The first objective is to utilize reservoir characterization and advanced technologies to optimize the design of a carbon dioxide (CO{sub 2}) project for the South Cowden Unit (SCU) located in Ector County, Texas. The SCU is a mature, relatively small, shallow shelf carbonate unit nearing, waterflood depletion. The second objective is to demonstrate the performance and economic viability of the project in the field. This report includes work on the reservoir characterization and project design … more

Safety evaluation for packaging for 1720-DR sodium-filled tank

Description: Preparations are under way to sell the sodium stored in the 1720-DR tank in the 1720-DR building. This will require that the tank, as well as the 1720-DR facility, be moved to the 300 Area, so that the sodium may be melted and transferred into a railroad tanker car. Because the sodium is a hazardous material and is being shipped in a nonspecification packaging, a safety evaluation for packaging (SEP) is required. This SEP approves the sodium-filled tank for a single shipment from the 105-DR are… more

Lattice and off-lattice side chain models of protein folding: Linear time structure prediction better than 86% of optimal

Description: This paper considers the protein structure prediction problem for lattice and off-lattice protein folding models that explicitly represent side chains. Lattice models of proteins have proven extremely useful tools for reasoning about protein folding in unrestricted continuous space through analogy. This paper provides the first illustration of how rigorous algorithmic analyses of lattice models can lead to rigorous algorithmic analyses of off-lattice models. The authors consider two side chain … more

Colloid and Ionic Tracer Migration Within SRS Sediments: Final Summary

Description: The generation of a stable colloidal suspension in geologic materials has a number of environmental implications. Mobile colloids may act as vectors for the transport of adsorbed contaminants through soils and within aquifers and can cause serious problems related to well monitoring and formation permeability in an injections well system. Colloid-facilitated transport has been implicated in the migration of contaminants from seepage basins on the Department of Energy`s Savannah River Site (SRS)… more

Tribopolymerization as an anti-wear mechanism. Quarterly progress report, July--September 1996

Description: During this quarterly period, the author has made progress in a number of areas. He has continued to evaluate potential candidates for high load/high speed antiwear action using the approach of generating tribopolymers capable of withstanding high temperatures. Results are promising for ceramics as well as steel. The construction of a new instrument for high temperature studies of both liquid and vapor phase lubrication is almost complete. This will permit studies up to 350 C bulk temperature a… more
