Preparing the Alcator C bolometer system for use on MTX (Microwave Tokamak Experiment)

Description: The Alcator C bolometer array has been modified to be compatible with electron cyclotron heating on the Microwave Tokamak Experiment. Fine wire mesh screens are mounted on the front of the bolometer collimator tubes to attenuate microwave heating of the bolometers. Structural changes eliminate openings in the seams of the bolometer housing, which represent pathways for microwaves to enter the system. This paper outlines the operational principles of the bolometer system, discusses the measured … more

Critical Flow Restricting Orifices

Description: The installation of flow restricting orifices in both the nitrogen gas and instrument air supply lines in the D-Zero Building limits the flow available to the various users. These orifices are strategically positioned along the lines such that no one user can monopolize the gas supply and deprive others of their flow required to operate. Provided that the necessary orifice plates are machined in a manner similar to that of the prototypes, the orifices for the various lines were sized using the … more

Trip Report: RAM-PAC International

Description: In the final design of the DO Detector, the three cryostats (CC and both EC's) will ride on a pair of hardened ways so as to move the EC's out and away from the CC cryostat to provide access between cryostats for repairs and such. Each of the cryostats sits on a carriage which has a pair of Tychoway rollers placed at each corner to roll on the hardened ways. When in position, the full weight of the cryostats is to be relieved from the rollers with the use of a pair of 90-ton jacks flanking the … more

Proposed design of SAMUS (small angle muon spectrometer) toroid and its magnetic field calculation

Description: Presently the D/null/ detector has three big toroidal magnets; one Central Toroid (CF) and two End Wall Toroids (EF). The EF toroids have central openings 72'' x 72''. Originally, this opening was meant for possible future end-plug calorimeters. Instead we are now designing Small Angle Muon Spectrometer (SAMUS) for the opening. The major component will be built at Serpukhov. The design of the toroid magnets and its magnetic field calculations is being done by exchanging information between Serp… more

Tank C6A solids

Description: The Separations Technology Laboratory was requested to characterize solids, removed as a slurry, from cleanout of Tank C6A last month. For some time, solids had been appearing in samples taken from this tank. The analytical evidence from this study shows the solids, although principally plutonium and aluminum, to be a complex mixture, stoichiometrically. The solids have likely been forming over the past few years due to conditions leading to insolubility, primarily of aluminum nitrate, in Tank … more
