Evaluation of the mouse micronucleus test as compared with the in vivo cytogenics test for mutagenicity of synthetic fuel materials. Topical report

Description: This brief topical report, provides information on a comparison of the mouse micronucleus mutagenic test proposed by a DOE contractor (FMC) for coal derived chemicals; as compared with the in vivo cytogenic test. The latter procedure is repotedly preferred by EPA authorities connected with implementation of the toxic substances control act (TOSCA). This evaluation was performed at the request of Headquarters DOE program management staff. The mouse micronucleus test takes less time and costs app… more

Rf heating of mirrors

Description: A brief overview is presented of potential uses for rf heating of plasmas in mirror devices. While some discussion relating to past experiments is given, the main emphasis is devoted to a review of potential experiments in presently existing devices, and devices under construction or planning. Some predictions are made for plasmas in mirror reactors.

Additional cooling and heating load improvements in seasonal performance modeling of room and central air conditioners and heat pumps. Topical report, Subtask 3. 2

Description: The study focuses on improving the load modeling technique of Seasonal Performance Model (SPM) in order to estimate a more realistic load for seasonal analysis calculations on an hourly basis. A computer simulation program, Seasonal Performance Model Load (SPMLD), was used to calculate the cooling and heating loads for a typical residence in Caribou, Maine; Columbia, Missouri; and Fort Worth, Texas. The derivation of the SPMLD is described and changes made to improve cooling and heating load es… more

High-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR): long term program plan

Description: The FY 1980 effort was to investigate four technology options identified by program participants as potentially viable candidates for near-term demonstration: the Gas Turbine system (HTGR-GT), reflecting its perceived compatibility with the dry-cooling market, two systems addressing the process heat market, the Reforming (HTGR-R) and Steam Cycle (HTGR-SC) systems, and a more developmental reactor system, The Nuclear Heat Source Demonstration Reactor (NHSDR), which was to serve as a basis for bo… more

Handbook for the marketing of conservation and solar-energy programs

Description: A process-oriented approach is described for encouraging community level energy conservation and planning programs. The approach is designed to augment existing energy programs by focusing on the major barriers to changing current energy-related behavior and attitudes. A variety of concepts, tools and techniques which can be used to overcome these barriers are described. Suggestions are offered on how to design community energy campaign based on the concepts, tools and techniques described. Som… more

Efficient ultrasonic grinding: a new technology for micron-sized coal. Quarterly technical progress report No. 1, September 15-December 15, 1979

Description: During the first quarter, preliminary testing demonstrated the ability of ultrasonically enhanced comminution to increase fraction of -200 mesh particles by 100 to 500% over mechanical grinding alone. Modification of the preliminary ultrasonic comminution process to include cycles of ultrasonic activation followed by removal of fines has shown a significant increase in the production of -325 mesh particles (-44 microns) with substantial fractions in the -20 micron and -10 micron ranges. Efforts… more
