Synchrotron radiation shielding for SLC alcove electronics

Description: The question has been raised concerning where to put lead shielding to reduce the synchrotron radiation dose to the electronics in the alcoves. Assuming that the alcoves are not near a collimator, the dominant radiation source is synchrotron radiation. Previous calculations indicate that a one-centimeter-thick lead door on the alcove would provide sufficient shielding. It was proposed that a one-half-inch-thick lead door be used (the next available thickness). The door would be roughly 36 squar… more

Compilation of carbon-14 data

Description: A review and critical analysis was made of the original sources of carbon-14 in the graphite moderator and reflector zones of the eight Hanford production reactors, the present physical and chemical state of the carbon-14, pathways (other than direct combustion) by which the carbon-14 could be released to the biosphere, and the maximum rate at which it might be released under circumstances which idealistically favor the release. Areas of uncertainty are noted and recommendations are made for ob… more

Scientific Potential and Design Considerations for an Undulator Beam Line on Aladdin Storage Ring

Description: The unique features of undulator radiation, i.e., high photon flux and brightness, partial coherence, small beam divergence, spectral tunability, etc., mandate that undulators be included in the future plans for Aladdin. This will make it possible to perform the next generation of experiments in photon-stimulated spectroscopies. A team of scientists (see Appendix) has now been assembled to build an insertion device (ID) and the associated beam line at Aladdin. In considering the specifications … more

Constitutional Conventions: Political and Legal Questions

Description: This report discusses the applications that have been passed by 32 of the necessary 34 State legislatures to convene a convention to propose an amendment prohibiting abortion. Because this process for amending the Constitution has never been used, several unresolved legal and policy questions arise governing the convening and the authority of such a convention.
