Preliminary Evaluation of Chlorine for Use as a Gas Cooled Reactor Safeguard*

Description: A coolant line rupture during operation of a high temperature gas cooled graphite moderated reactor would present a serious hazard. The reactor would immediately depressurize and a great deal of air would be introduced into the coolant stream. As the air passed over the graphite moderator a runaway oxidation reaction would probably ensue unless an adequate safety system were available. This investigation was designed to evaluate chlorine as a reactor safeguard to be used to control a runaway re… more

Electrical Resistance Measurements of an Irradiated Uranium Sample

Description: The results of electrical resistance measurements have been used as a means of following changes occurring in metals due to irradiation. The electrical conductivity is sensitive to changes in composition and to cold-work or structure damage. In an anisotropic metal, such as uranium, the director of measurement also influences to some extent the values obtained. For these reasons it is essential to use the same material, and if possible the same piece of material, in comparing the electrical … more

Use of Commercial Grade Methane in ASP Counting Instruments

Description: The gas commonly used in the chamber of the Simpson Proportional Alpha Counter (ASP) is the high grade, 99% pure methane. The cost of the gas has often raised the question of finding an adequate substitute and a number of substitutions have been attempted. Commercial methane has been substituted successfully for 99% pure methane and its use is recommended in ASP counters. Neither commercial nor technical methane caused any significant changes in instrument operation.

Physical Properties of Neutralized Zirflex Waste

Description: Zirflex cladding waste is to be neutralized to pH 10 before transfer to waste storage tanks. This treatment causes the precipitation of zirconium oxide or hydroxide, which may lead to flow difficulties during transfer. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the physical properties and flow characteristics of the neutralized slurry to assist in the selectin of satisfactory transfer equipment and storage conditions.

Critical Incident Alarm - Model I Instruction and Maintenance Manual

Description: The HAPO Critical Incident Alarm, Model I, is an instrument designed to give an audible and visual alarm signal in the event of a critical incident to which it is exposed. There will be thirty-one (31) of these instruments installed and several spares located in the various manufacturing buildings in the Chemical Processing Department where there exists any possibility of a critical incident occurring. The instrument is intended as a post or after-the-fact warning device. It will offer no prote… more

Improvements in Water Treatment for Once-Through Reactor Cooling

Description: Nearly all nuclear reactors being designed and built today- whether for research, power, or productions of fissionable materials- use recirculating fluids for cooling. However, a number of production reactors are still operating with single-pass cooling by treated natural water. The Hanford Atomic Products Operation of the General Electric Company presently operates production reactors for the AEC at Richland, Washington. The first reactors were built during World War II, and utilized a standar… more

Final Report of Stainless Steel Connector Evaluation

Description: The primary objective of the tests described herein was to determine if the standard five bend connector (drawing H-1-23475) and/or the T. F. Robinson three bend connector (drawing SK-1-20855) fabricated from Type 304 stainless steel tubing would satisfy the requirements of the K reactors. Results of the tests show that the standard five bend connector made from Type 304 stainless steel 0.065 inch wall tubing, in the as bent condition, with either cadmium plated Parker brass nuts and sleeves or… more

Statistical Analysis of Run to Rupture Tests Involving More Than Two Metal Types

Description: In the reference document, a statistical method for analyzing run to rupture tests involving two metal types, a test material and a control standard, is presented. It often happens that more than two metal types are involved in a production test. In this document, the statistical procedure recommended for this situation is presented.

The Coulometric Titration of Plutonium

Description: This work was performed to develop a general chemical method for the determination of small amounts of plutonium in solution. The work showed that a coulometric titration based on the preliminary oxidation of the plutonium to Pu (VI) followed by titration with electrolytically-generated ferrous ion to Pu (IV) was such a general method and was subject to few interferences. The significance of the work is that a chemical determination of plutonium can be made for amounts of plutonium heretofore d… more

Critical Pressure Ratio for a Nozzle with Two-Phase Fog Flow

Description: In many cases of analysis of two-phase flow in systems, considerable computation or program time could be saved if the critical pressures ratio were known. If a reservoir or plenum pressure is fixed, the usual computational procedure involves the assumption of several critical pressures and the generation of several momentum terms to find the applicable critical pressure ratio and thereby the critical flow. The formulation of an equation of state make it possible to compute critical pressure ra… more

Glove Box Integrity Study

Description: The amount of dry air or inert gas supplied to a "one pass" glove box ventilation system is proportional to the glove box inleakage. Most glove boxes in the 234r5 Building are equipped with sundry attachments, each contributing to the inleakage. No individual leak rate date is available for these auxiliary components in the "as installed" condition. Nor is the effect of time upon the leak rates known. Knowledge of these values, or at least an indication of the order of magnitude of the leakage … more

100-N Decontamination Facility Design Guide.

Description: Space has been reserved near the southeast corner of the 100-N Area for the 122-N Decontamination Facility. Previous correspondence between Burns and Roe, Inc and General Electric bae discussed various facilities which might be needed in the building. The concepts of the decontamination processes are under active development by research groups at Hanford. At present, there are several workable processes known; each one has one or more fairly serious drawbacks.

Irradiation Effects in Cladding Materials

Description: Limitations on the service life of a fuel element imposed by degradation of the fissile core during irradiation have been a matter of great concern. Limitations imposed by changes in cladding properties during irradiation should be evaluated with equal care. Zircaloy-2, stainless steel, and aluminum alloys have been irradiated in the form of cladding on metallic and ceramic fuel elements. Several aspects of fuel behavior as influenced by these clad materials will be discussed. All observations … more

This report attempts to list all measurements on water-uranium heterogenous lattices made to date at Hanford. All lattices were water moderated hexagonal arrays loaded with uranium of enrichments up to 3.15.
