The Ductility of Brazed Stainless Steel Joints

Description: Abstract: "The ductility of Type 310 stainless steel T-joints brazed with GE-62 brazing alloy was measured at room temperatures 1200, 1650, and 1800 F. The measure of ductility was taken as the plastic axial strain required to crack braze fillets in T-section tensile specimens. At elevated temperatures, the ductility of as-brazed joints approximated that of the stainless steel, but at room temperature the brazed joints had only one-tenth the ductility of the base metal. The Effect of Age on the Radiosensitivity of Mice

Description: Abstract: Mice of different ages ranging from 1.5 to 12 months have been exposed to gamma rays in an effort to determine the change in radiosensitivity with age. The dose necessary to cause 50% killing was determined for each age group and sex. No change in sensitivity with age was observed with either sex, although the experimental error in the case of the males was quite large. The females were found to be more resistant than the males.

The Solubility of Uranyl Oxalate and the Existence of Undissociated Uranyl Oxalate in Solution

Description: Abstract: "The solubility of the solid, UO2C2O4 x rH2O, was measured at various acid and uranyl nitrate concentrations. The results of the measurements prove the existence of the uranyl oxalate complex - UO2C2O4, in solutions containing excess UO2^2."

A Study of Reactor Systems for the Production of Tritium and Radioactive Cobalt

Description: "A conceptual design study of reactors for the join production of tritium and colbat-60 has been made. The study covered a family of four reactors raging in thermal power from 16.5 MW to 150 MW, and designed for corresponding annual productions ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 million curies of tritium respectively."--P. v.

Reactivity of the Critical Experiment as a Function of Gap Width

Description: "The split reactor of the Critical Experiment is analyzed, using a single-energy group-diffusion approximation. A further approximation is introduced in that the two halves of the reactor are treated as a parallelopipeds rather than the half-cylinders. The reactivity of the reactor is obtained as a function of the separation of the two halves, both for the 'standard' uranium concentration and for various greater concentrations."

The Metal-Dielectric Junction of High-Voltage Insulators in Vacuum and Magnetic Field

Description: From introduction: "This study is concerned with the shape of the electrodes of high-voltage insulator and with the method of joining them to the dielectric. The study is limited to insulators operating in vacuum, with special interest in the cases where strong magnetic fields are present. It is further limited to insulators with the high-voltage electrodes maintained at negative potential. The object of the study was to obtain information that would aid in improving the design of the insulator… more

The Influence of Isotopic Composition on the Maximum in the Cosmic Ray Energy Spectra

Description: "The previously found maximum in the cosmic radiation energy spectrum is discussed, and the possibility that it arises in part from a misinterpretation of the data due to oversimplifying assumptions about the composition of the beam is examined. The importance that lack of recognition of isotopic composition may have is pointed out, and it is clear that this importance is strongly dependent on the measurements made and on the cut-off rigidity."

An Investigation of Scaling of Zirconium at Elevated Temperatures : Quarterly Status Report No. 10; Sept. 2, 1955 to Dec. 2, 1955

Description: As previously reported, zirconium undergoes large dimensional increases after scaling in air in a critical temperature range, 700 degree-1050 degree C. This finding was observed with specimens of a constant thickness (0;062 in.) To study the thickness effect, a number of specimens ranging in thickness from 0.020 to 0.200 in. were scaled in air at a temperature (900 degree C) where the growth is a maximum for a given time. Both cold rolled iodine sheet and forged iodide bar stock were used. to d… more

Heat and Free Energy of the Neptunium (IV)-(V) Couple in Perchloric Acid

Description: Abstract: "The potential of the Np(IV)-Np(V) couple is not directly measurement since the couple does not establish reversible equilibrium at an inert electrode. Reproducible potential measurements were obtainable, however, in solutions containing Np(IV), Np(V), Pe(II), and Pe(III) ions in oxidation-reduction equilibrium. The expected fourth power hydrogen ion dependence of the Np(IV)-Np(V) couple was confirmed over the range 0.25-1.0 molar perchloric acid concentration. The heat of the reactio… more

Uranium concentrations in water from 150 ppm to 30,000 ppm have been investigated. The effect of copper as a typical contaminant in the range of 737 ppm of copper to 36,850 ppm of copper has been investigated for a representative uranium solution. Instrumentation has been constantly improved and suggestions for further improvements in amplifying … more

Beta Magnet Current Stability

Description: Abstract: A TEC regulator amplifier driving an Eaterline-Angus recording meter was used to record magnet current variations. Tests were made to determine magnet current variations. Tests were made to determine magnet current stability for currents from 500 amperes to 4000 amperes. Changes were necessary in both the TEC and GE regulators before currents below 2500 amperes could be regulated. Regulation to 0.025 percent for and hour was obtained for currents of 1000 to 4000 amperes with the TEC a… more
