Comparison of the performance of a helicopter-type ram-jet engine under various centrifugal loadings

Description: Report presenting an investigation of an 18-foot-radius helicopter rotor powered by tip-mounted ramjet engines in the helicopter test tower. The engine performance is compared with the performance determined in a previous investigation of a 9-foot-radius rotor with the same engines at similar speeds but with twice the centrifugal forces. Results regarding the propulsive characteristics, minimum specific fuel consumption and corresponding propulsive thrust, and operational characteristics are pr… more

Survey of Refractory Uranium Compounds

Description: Abstract: Chemical and physical data on twenty binary uranium compounds that may prove suitable for refractory nuclear fuels were assembled. The compounds were those with aluminum, boron, carbon, iron, nickel, nitrogen, silicon, or sulfur. Too little is known at this time about the compounds to evaluate any of them for fuel. The program is being extended in an effort to provide the needed data.

A Preliminary Investigation of the Performance of a Short Length Turbojet Combustor Using Vaporized Hydrocarbon Fuels

Description: "Two short turbojet combustors designed for use with vaporized hydrocarbon fuels were tested in a one-quarter annular duct. The experimental combustors consisted of many small "swirl-can" combustor elements manifolded together. This design approach allowed the secondary mixing zone to be considerably reduced over that of conventional combustors" (p. 1).

Sampling SX-tank farm condensate

Description: In accordance with the policy that a centralized inventory shall be kept of all radioactive waste liquid discharged to ground, it is recommended that the volumes of condensate from the SX-farm, the dates or periods of discharge, and the activity densities of radioisotopes in the condensate discharged be determined by Separations Section and reported regularly to the Radiological Standards Unit. This paper is a description of the condensate system, with recommendations for sampling and analysis.

Heat Exchanger Design Charts

Description: From introduction: "The ORNL-ANP liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger design and development effort has been based on an exceptionally high performance matrix of closely-spaced small diameter tubes that permits practically pure counter-flow operation. In the course of full-scale aircraft power plant design work a number of charts for this type of heat exchanger has been prepared. These charts were intended in part to show the effects of the various parameters in a readily understandable form, and in… more

Electromagnetic Research Division Quarterly Progress Report, Part I for Period Ending June 30, 1952

Description: From abstract: "On the 86-inch cyclotron a 41-kw beam has been calorimetered at a net ion loading efficiency of 40%; the average proton current was 1.85 ma at 22.5 Mev. Practical specific yields have been determined for (p,2n) reactions on zinc and bismuth. The investigation of products of proton-induced fission of uranium has been continued and new techniques are being used in measuring angular distribution of reaction products. The 63-inch heavy particle cyclotron is now in operation; N+++ pa… more

Evaluation of Tributyl Phosphate in Jet Mixing Columns as a Solvent for Uranium Extraction From Slurry-Type Ore Feeds

Description: Technical report outlining the physical operability of 30% tributyl phosphate in a hydrocarbon dilutent for the extraction of uranium from more feed slurries. Operability had been satisfactorily demonstrated in jet mixing columns at the pilot plant of the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works. [From Abstract]

Interim report No.1, PT-105-403-P, installation and initial operation

Description: The effect of temperature on the properties of graphite is being determined by exposing samples to pile neutrons at controlled temperatures in the range 75 C to 225 C. The first series of samples were charged into the newly installed dry, water-cooled test channel at B pile on January 23, 1951. This report presents details of the charging operation and observations noted during the initial operation of the test.

Off-Gas Treatment in Berkeley Enclosures

Description: "In the past ten years quantities of alpha-, beta-, gamma- and neutron-emitting isotopes handled in enclosures have increased from microcuries to kilocuries. Contaminated-atmosphere problems have increased accordingly. Developments at Berkeley are reviewed with particular emphasis on recent equipment, viz: a multiple-purpose gas scrubber and a total-capture system for slug-dissolver off gas."

Improved Spectrographic Analysis of Uranium and Plutonium by the Carrier Concentration Method

Description: Introduction: "The carrier (pyroelectric) concentration method is commonly used in the spectrographic analysis of plutonium metal. This report describes work which lead to substantial improvements in accuracy, precision and ease with which the analysis is made. Included are data from analyses of plutonium metal by the original and the improved carrier methods, and the cupferron extraction method."

The storage and handling of J-slugs

Description: The nuclear safety specifications (1) for handling J-slugs have previously been reviewed. These specifications provided information for the storage of loaded 100-hole shipping containers and loaded 66-hole wood cart pallets in certain arrays. Storage of J-slugs in J-Material Crates conforming to Drawing No. H-3-6217 had not been reviewed for the previous specifications. It has become desirable to provide specifications for J-slug storage in these crates as well as make additions to the present … more
