Wire-rope emplacement of diagnostics systems

Description: The study reported here was initiated to determine if, with the Cable Downhole System (CDS) currently under development, there is an advantage to using continuous wire rope to lower the emplacement package to the bottom of the hole. A baseline design using two wire ropes as well as several alternatives are discussed in this report. It was concluded that the advantages of the wire-rope emplacement system do not justify the cost of converting to such a system, especially for LLNL's maximum emplac… more

Estimation of tracer diffusion coefficients of ions in aqueous solution

Description: Equations are given for estimating tracer diffusion coefficients D/sub i//sup 0/ of ions at infinite dilution in terms of limiting ionic conductances ..lambda../sub i//sup 0/. Also given are generalized Nernst-Hartley equations for binary and multicomponent diffusion coefficients D/sup 0/ and D/sub ij//sup 0/, respectively, at infinite dilution. Data, estimates, and correlations for ..lambda../sub i//sup 0/ at 25/sup 0/C and other temperatures are discussed. Estimated values of ..lambda../sub i… more

Plasma-Parameter Measurements Using Neutral-Particle-Beam Attenuation

Description: Intense and energetic neutral-particle-beam injection used for fueling or heating magnetically confined, controlled-fusion experimental plasmas can also provide diagnostic measurements of the plasmas. The attenuation of an atomic beam (mainly from charge-exchange and ionization interactions) when passing through a plasma gives the plasma line density. Orthogonal arrays of highly collimated detectors of the secondary-electron-emission type have been used in magnetic-mirror experiments to measure… more

Physics conceptual design for the MFTF-B transition coil

Description: The physics constraints related to finite-..beta.. equilibria, ..beta.. limits due to curvature-driven MHD modes, and ion transport in the central cell. These physics constraints had to be satisfied subject to certain non-physics constraints. Principal among these were the geometric and structural features of the existing MFTF-B magnet set and the required access for neutral beams for pumping. These constraints and their origins are discussed.

Effects of magnetic non-linearities on a stored proton beam and their implications for superconducting storage rings

Description: In this report we describe an experiment which was conducted at the SPS to observe the combined effects of a single isolated high-order nonlinear resonance, nonlinear detuning, and tune modulation. The nonlinear resonance, as well as the nonlinear detuning, was driven by a nonlinear lens, which had been previously used at the SPS for the study of the beam-beam interactions. The nonlinear motion of a particle in the field of the lens is discussed.
