The Boron-Carbon System: Final Technical Report, May 1, 1960 - April 30, 1961

Description: Abstract: The boron-carbon equilibrium diagram has been determined by X-ray, metallographic, and thermal analysis of sintered and arc-cast alloys. A single carbide having a range of solubility from approximately 9 to 20 a/o carbon and melting congruently exists in the system. The terminal solubility of carbon in boron is 0.1-0.2a/o. The freezing reaction at the composition and melting temperature of elemental boron; there is a eutectic reaction at 29a/o carbon and 2375 degrees Celcius. No allot… more

Radioisotope concentrations in the PRTR primary coolant and helium system during operation with a failed fuel element(s)

Description: Fission product measurements in the PRTR primary D{sub 2}O and helium systems during the startup tests in May 1961, showed the presence of a defective fuel elements(s). Reactor operation was discontinued during the latter part of May and during June for reactor maintenance and fuel element inspection. On resumption of operation on July 1, a sampling and analytical program was initiated to study the radioisotope concentrations resulting from this defective element(s) which were present in the pr… more

Planned normalization of plutonium yield predictions to the twelve two-ton test batch measurements

Description: This report is a comparison of findings from the twelve two-ton test batches irradiated in the KE and H reactors with respect to reactor plutonium yield predictions. Included are plans for the application of these findings to improve the accuracy of plutonium yield equations used for Hanford product accountability.

Proposal for charging GEH-10-43 NINI interim measurement test in the ETR

Description: The objective of this test is to irradiate an NPR fuel element inner tube in the ETR 3 {times} 3 Loop. the NPR fuel element is a tube in tube type. Both tubes are Zircaloy-2 clad uranium metal. The inner tube is identified by the Hanford designation NINI. In GEH-10-43 we plan to measure an NINI tube after each cycle for four cycles. An NPR inner tube with slightly larger diameter has been run in the ETR Hanford 3 {times} 3 Loop. Two NINI elements are now running in the 3 {times} 3 Loop.

Some fire and fission product release possibilities for discharged fuel slugs

Description: An attempt was made to appraise the slug fire and fission product possibilities associated with held-up slugs, as a function of slug power and down-time before discharge. Limitations of the data are discussed and suggestions given for refinement and related hazards analyses.

Nuclear health and safety technical specifications. Revision 1

Description: This information contained in this document is a compilation of technical specifications applicable to the process limits for the eight existing Hanford Production Reactors. These technical specifications, together with other administrative procedures and controls, would define the limits of reactor operation and would establish administrative methods for obtaining approvals, reviews, and procedures for making changes. Operating and performance restrictions are reported for: reactivity, reactor… more

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core II Without the SM-1 Core I High Burnup Elements and With the PM-1-M-2 Element

Description: Abstract: The removal of both SM-1 Core I high burnup elements from SM-1 Core II and the insertion of the PM-1-M-2 element and the SM-1 Core I spare element in SM-1 Core II is discussed. Nuclear and thermal characteristics of Core II with these changes are presented and conclusions related to the changes in the hazard potential are made. If the core change indicated by this report is made, local peaking factors will be decreased and burnout ratios will be increased. This, of course, in itself… more
