Survey of Refractory Uranium Compounds

Description: Abstract: Chemical and physical data on twenty binary uranium compounds that may prove suitable for refractory nuclear fuels were assembled. The compounds were those with aluminum, boron, carbon, iron, nickel, nitrogen, silicon, or sulfur. Too little is known at this time about the compounds to evaluate any of them for fuel. The program is being extended in an effort to provide the needed data.

Shielding Studies on Salt Slabs, Gadolinium, and Water

Description: Review of a study regarding a lid-tank shielding facility's properties, including fast-neutron and gamma dose rates and thermal-neutron fluxes, which were mapped in a symmetry plane. The removal cross section of gadolinium was determined through comparison with various other materials.

Aqueous Corrosion of Uranium Fuel-Element Cores Containing 0 to 20 w/o Zirconium

Description: Abstract: A description is given of the design and operation of a windowed autoclave system employed in the study of corrosion by pressurized hot water. The device has been used to obtain time-lapse motion pictures of the swelling and rupture of deliberately defected zirconium-clad uranium specimens. A method is described by which corrosion rates were calculated from pressure and temperature measurements.
