Specific heat loading in Nd:glass lasers

Description: The specific thermal load parameter, chi, for xenon flashlamp-pumped Nd:glass gain media is written as a function of neodymium concentration, pump pulse duration, and energy extraction efficiency. The currently available data on radiative and nonradiative decay probabilities of several commercial Nd:glasses are used to calculate and graph specific thermal load parameter values. By factoring these results into performance scaling relationships for zig-zag and disk lasers, specific Nd:glasses can… more

Development of magnetic mirror systems for nuclear testing applications

Description: Several system studies have concluded that the small size and steady state nature of magnetic mirror systems provide attractive features for nuclear-testing applications. The principle shortcoming of mirror systems is their small data base relative to that of tokamaks. This paper summarizes the present data base and describes experiments that could be carried out with small modifications of existing facilities to explore plasma physics issues associated with the production of high neutron fluxe… more

SERDP ER-1376 Enhancement of In Situ Bioremediation of Energetic Compounds by Coupled Abiotic/Biotic Processes:Final Report for 2004 - 2006

Description: This project was initiated by SERDP to quantify processes and determine the effectiveness of abiotic/biotic mineralization of energetics (RDX, HMX, TNT) in aquifer sediments by combinations of biostimulation (carbon, trace nutrient additions) and chemical reduction of sediment to create a reducing environment. Initially it was hypothesized that a balance of chemical reduction of sediment and biostimulation would increase the RDX, HMX, and TNT mineralization rate significantly (by a combination … more

PION SCATTERING FROM A POLARIZED TARGET

Description: This report describes the use of a target containing polarized protons in a particle-scattering experiment. Positive pions of 246-MeV kinetic energy were scattered from the polarized protons. The parameter P that was measured is equivalent to that determined by analyzing the recoil-proton polarization in scattering from an unpolarized target. It has been measured to a higher accuracy than heretofore achieved in pion-proton scattering, at an energy and at angles inconvenient for double-scatterin… more

Temporal Representation in Semantic Graphs

Description: A wide range of knowledge discovery and analysis applications, ranging from business to biological, make use of semantic graphs when modeling relationships and concepts. Most of the semantic graphs used in these applications are assumed to be static pieces of information, meaning temporal evolution of concepts and relationships are not taken into account. Guided by the need for more advanced semantic graph queries involving temporal concepts, this paper surveys the existing work involving tempo… more

Description: The 126-B-3 waste site is the former coal storage pit for the 184-B Powerhouse. During demolition operations in the 1970s, the site was used for disposal of demolition debris from 100-B/C Area facilities. The site has been remediated by removing debris and contaminated soils. The results of verification sampling demonstrated that residual contaminant concentrations do not preclude any future uses and allow for unrestricted use of shallow zone soils. The results also showed that residual contami… more
