Introduction to magnetic confinement fusion diagnostics

Description: These notes present a brief survey of some of the current diagnostic techniques used in magnetic fusion plasma devices. To give an idea of the range of parameters and geometries encountered the parameters of four representative experiments - PLT, TMX, ZT-40 and EBT-I(S) - are given. The central issue of all experiments is to understand the flow of power which can be summarized by two volume integrated equations for the ions and electrons.

Determination of trace impurities in uranium hexafluoride by an inductively coupled argon plasma spectrometer

Description: A procedure has been developed to determine 21 trace impurity elements in uranium hexafluoride, using inductively coupled argon plasma emission spectrometry (ICAP). The method consists of a liquid-liquid extraction to separate uranium from the trace impurities with a mixture of tri-(2-ethyl-hexyl)-phosphate (TEHP) and heptane. The raffinate containing the elements is subsequently analyzed by ICAP. The impurity elements which can be analyzed by this method are: Al, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr,… more

Summary of computational support and general documentation for computer code (GENTREE) used in Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation Pilot Salt Site Selection Project

Description: A Decision Tree Computer Model was adapted for the purposes of a Pilot Salt Site Selection Project conducted by the Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation (ONWI). A deterministic computer model was developed to structure the site selection problem with submodels reflecting the five major outcome categories (Cost, Safety, Delay, Environment, Community Impact) to be evaluated in the decision process. Time-saving modifications were made in the tree code as part of the effort. In addition, format change… more

Patterns of United States mortality for ten selected causes of death

Description: Income, ethnicity, education, and occupation are examples of socio-economic factors associated with the occurrence of disease, whether an investigation focuses on an individual or on an aggregation of individuals. In this study, data aggregated to the county level are used to explore two issues - geographic variation and geographic covariation of ten selected causes of death in the United States. The counties of the United States are characterized by 15 socio-economic variables and age-adjusted… more

Large-area sheet task advanced dendritic web growth development. Quarterly report, October 23, 1983-December 31, 1983

Description: Two types of design concepts were evaluated with the thermal models: (1) a vertical thermal element which modifies both the temperature profile in the web as well as the convective gas flow near the web; and (2) a thinner lid configuration in which the second lid is replaced by a hot cavity. Each involves trade-offs which need experimental evaluation. Residual stress measurements using the serial split-width technique indicated that the real residual stress was comparable to (or less than) the … more

Edge blurring in stacked x-ray film screen combinations. [Flash radiography for nuclear weapons design]

Description: The Advanced Experiments Group of B-Division, LLNL, has been seeking to improve the sensitivity and spatial resolution of stacked film screens for bremsstrahlung flash radiography of imploding, dense metal shells. In the work reported here, we experimentally measured the spreading of the x-ray shadow of the edge of a uranium block in two film-and-screen combinations. We also used the SANDYL code, which models photon and electron scattering, to calculate the theoretical edge spreading in an arra… more

Enhanced durability and reactivity for zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent

Description: AMAX Research Development Center (AMAX R D) has been investigating methods for enhancing the reactivity and durability of the zinc ferrite desulfurization sorbent. Zinc ferrite sorbents are intended for use in desulfurization of hot coal gas in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) or molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) applications. For the present program, the reactivity of the sorbent may be defined as its sulfur sorption capacity at the breakthrough point and at saturation in a bench-… more

Pressure drop considerations of a lithium cooled fusion breeder tokamak reactor blanket

Description: Liquid lithium was selected as one of the coolants for the 1983 fusion breeder blanket used on the magnetically confined tokamak fusion reactor, and as a result, the thermal-hydraulic calculations were dominated by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) considerations. The applicable sets of MHD equations for the engineering thermal-hydraulic design were reviewed and compared. Special attention was given to the MHD calculations for the fertile material zone, a packed bed of composite beryllium and thorium b… more

Vibration analysis of APS magnet/support systems based on the finite element method

Description: Prediction of the dynamic response of APS magnet/support systems requires knowledge of the free vibrational characteristics, including natural frequencies, modes, and modal damping ratios. A preliminary dynamic analysis of the magnet/support system of a typical section of the APS storage ring, as presented in the APS Conceptual Design Report, was performed to gain insight. The preliminary analysis is based on the assumption that the support girder could be considered rigid relative to the stiff… more

Design note of an air-cooled 2 ft x 2 ft x 10. 5 ft long muon spoiler

Description: This note describes the construction of a muon spoiler (magnetized steel assembly) with a cross section of 2 ft by 2 ft and a length of 10.5 ft. Two such spoilers are operated in series at an average field of about 15 kGauss, from one 100 ADC, 40 V power supply. The purpose of the spoilers is to prevent muons from easily escaping beyond the muon laboratory experimental area by bending them down so that they have to pass through more earth. The spoilers reduce the muon dose rate beyond the exper… more

Environmental radiological studies downstream from the Rancho Seco Nuclear Power Generating Station, 1985

Description: Information compiled in 1985 while assessing the environmental impact of radionuclides previously discharged with aqueous releases from the Rancho Seco Nuclear Power Generating Plant is presented. In October 1984, the quantities of gamma-emitting radionuclides in water discharged to Clay Creek from the plant were reduced below operationally defined detection limits for liquid effluents. However, radionuclides previously discharged persist in the downstream environment and are found in many aqua… more

Analysis of NSWC quasi-static compaction data for porous beds of ball powder, melamine, and Teflon, using structural compaction model

Description: A structural compaction model is used to correlate NSWC quasi-static compaction data on porous beds of six (6) different materials, i.e., four (4) ball powders, melamine, and Teflon. Initial densities of the porous beds ranged from 44 percent solid theoretical maximum density (TMD) to 70 percent TMD. Maximum compacted densities were about 90 percent TMD except for Teflon which was compacted to approximately 98 percent TMD. Pressures calculated by the model, plotted as a function of percent TMD,… more

Betatron motion and optical deflection in free electron lasers

Description: Transverse displacement of the electron beam at input to the wiggler induces betatron oscillation, imparting a sinusoidal transverse displacement to the gain medium seen by the optical beam. As the light propagates down this ''rippled'' medium it is guided by the dispersion, thereby acquiring some transverse sinusoidal displacement. At output from the wiggler the optical beam in general has acquired some transverse component of velocity, that is, it propagates off-axis. As the e-beam displaceme… more

Possible benefits from shuffling dipoles in the RHIC

Description: An example is given which demonstrates how dipole shuffling can be done to minimize various effects of magnetic errors. The concepts of ''global'' and ''local'' compensation are explained. With a Gaussian distribution, it is found to be possible to achieve an improvement of factor four or five over the statistically expected values without too much sacrifice in nonlinear distortion. There was no difference found in the performance between shuffling eight dipoles and shuffling twelve, and the tu… more

DRCELL: A software package for drift chamber cell design

Description: Designing a drift chamber cell geometry which optimizes resolution and two track separation is not a straightforward task. This paper describes a software package which helps visualize the behavior of drifting electrons within the cell under the influence of electric and magnetic fields. Histograms of chamber pulse shapes and arrival times may be generated. In addition, a calculation of the gas gain is performed. The package presently uses drift velocity, drift angle, gain, and dE/dx parameteri… more
