Initial TMX-U thermal-barrier experiments

Description: This paper describes results from the initial thermal barrier experiments in the Tandem Mirror Experiment-Upgrade (TMX-U). Strong end plugging has been produced using a combination of ECRH gyrotrons with sloshing ion beam injection. Plugging has been achieved with a central cell higher than that of the end plugs. In these low-density central cell experiments (7 x 10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/) the axial losses (tau/sub parallel to/ = 20 to 80 ms) are smaller than the radial losses (tau/sub perpendicula… more

Model of current enhancement at high pressure

Description: A model is proposed to account for the phenomenon of net current enhancement at high pressures recently observed on the Experimental Test Accelerator. The proposed mechanism involves energetic secondary electrons (delta rays) which are pushed forward by the self-magnetic field of the electron beam. For high current beams, the forward delta ray current can build up to a significant fraction of the beam current. Analytic calculations of the steady-state solution as well as the rate of buildup of … more

Measurement of seismic moments at the RSTN station RSSD for NTS explosions

Description: We have estimated the seismic moment for two Nevada Test Site (NTS) explosions (Nebbiolo, 6/24/82; Atrisco, 8/5/82) at the Regional Seismic Test Network (RSTN) station in South Dakota (RSSD; distance from NTS approx. 1280 km). The moments are calculated from the vertical component mid-period channel for the Rayleigh waves and the merged mid- and short-period band for the P waves. The moment estimates from surface waves give values of 1.0 x 10/sup 23/ and 2.0 x 10/sup 23/ dyn-cm for Nebbiolo and… more

Optical-emission studies in the ion-focused regime

Description: The utility of optical emissions for diagnostic purposes in the ion-focused regime is explored. Two possible uses of the emissions are examined: (1) the time delay of 337.1-nm emissions relative to 391.4-nm emissions is observed to scale with the beam-neutralization time, and (2) emissions at 391.4 nm may determine beam-current density at the front of the beam.

Mask locations in the SLC final focus region

Description: The location of four sets of masks needed to shield against background in the final focus region of the SLC is shown. The main point of this note is to update the results of Miller and Sens taking into account the recent changes that have been made in the optics of the SLC beams. For the latest beam design we use the TRANSPORT output dated 5-13-83. This design assumes that the final bends will form an S about the interaction point and that the final quadrupoles will be superconducting and will … more

Tritium breeding and activation in the cascade reactor

Description: Cascade is an inertial fusion reactor that uses circulating Li/sub 2/O pellets as a coolant and tritium breeding medium. The pellets flow through a horizontal rotating vessel, and they are held against the vessel wall by centrifugal force. Three wall designs were considered: a steel shell and a SiC shell prestressed by Al or steel cables. The nuclear heating, tritium breeding ration, afterheat, inhalation biological hazard potential, and shallow land burial index were calculated for each config… more

El Salvador: Policy Issues for the 98th Congress

Description: Since 1981 President Reagan has requested increasing amounts of military and economic aid to assist two embattled Salvadoran governments in he struggle against leftist guerrillas. While Congress has generally supported the Administration's requests for economic aid, it has regularly cut military assistance to El Salvador and has made the aid contingent upon a semi-annual Presidential certification that human rights are improving in the country.
