Detection and measurement of Post-Rosenbluth convective instability in MFTF with a hybrid CO/sub 2/ laser--heterodyne diagnostic system

Description: To measure and classify the Post-Rosenbluth convective loss-cone instability in MFTF, we propose to use a CO/sub 2/ laser consisting of a TEA-pulsed section and a low pressure CW section, together with a light mixing receiver. Calculations show that this system offers sufficient power and sensitivity to detect instability throughout the range from strong coherent light scattering to weak incoherent scattering when the instability is eliminated.

EDOT: a code to calculate charge particle slowing down in a plasma

Description: EDOT is a code that calculates the slowing down of a test particle in a Maxwellian plasma utilizing continuous slowing down theory. Both nuclear scattering and reactions are included. The output includes slowing down parameters as well as spectra of knock-on ions and in-flight reaction probabilities. The theory, input, and output for the code are described.

Solar and geothermal energy utilization n SF-2: a sensitivity analysis

Description: A sensitivity analysis was conducted of the utilization levels for Solar, Geothermal, and Advanced Energy Systems (ASGA) technologies during the 1985-2000 time period. In particular, the sensitivity of the utilization levels was tested with respet to both analytical techniques and to specific parameter assumptions. The sensitivity to analytical techniques was examined insofar as certain criteria were examined to elucidate their importance in determining the level of use of the ASGA technologies… more

Development of mullite substrates and containers. Silicon sheet growth development for the Large Area Silicon Sheet Task of the Low-Cost Silicon Solar array Project. Quarterly report No. 1, October 6, 1977--November 14, 1977

Description: Eight mullite bodies of varied compositions and microstructures have been prepared and are being characterized. These compositions will be submersed in molten silicon to study the impurity and surface effects. These various mullite materials will be analyzed for use as substrates for Honeywell Contract No. 954356, silicon on ceramic program and for use as a container of molten silicon. Low cost processing methods are being developed and evaluated for manufacturing large mullite sheets and mulli… more

Computer codes for processing data from coal-fired power plants. [PROGE, PROGX, PROGW, FM77, and FM88 Computer Codes]

Description: Computer codes are used to assist the reduction of data from the LLL project assessing emissions of coal-fired power plants. Five programs, PROGE, PROGX, PROGW, FM77, and FM78, have been developed recently to sort, reduce, and display data acquired from cascade impactor samples. The data include elemental concentrations, enrichment factors, standard deviations, weighted averages, and unit conversions. The procedures required to run these programs are given in this report.

Field Theories in Terms of Particle-String Variables: Spin, Internal Symmetries and Arbitrary Dimension

Description: Essential tools are provided for a program of rewriting field theories in terms of particle-string variables. The general methods are illustrated in the case of quantum chromodynamics: (1) One finds the particle-trajectoy representation for the quark Green's functional. (2) One derives directly correct end-point terms for quarks at the ends of strings. (1) and (2) are for any number of dimensions. (3) In two dimensions, one finds a functional bridge from quantum chromodynamics to the Bardeen-Ba… more

Analysis of owner design specifications for snubbers. Report 2

Description: The report discusses and evaluates the adequacy of buyer specifications for snubbers. Technical specifications for snubbers (hydraulic and mechanical) were studied in detail in an effort to define the ''fundamental needs'' of the industry with respect to characteristics of snubbers during operation. In the course of this study, it was determined that there is insufficient consensus among users to make such a definition. Authorities in the fields of structural dynamics, structural systems design… more

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Advanced, Sanitary Sewage Treatment at Rocky Flats

Description: A small, secondary treatment plant for processing sanitary wastes was upgraded by the addition of tertiary treatment (chemical treatment and final clarification) and mixed-media filtration. Operational data showed that the tertiary treatment significantly reduced pollutants. Filtration further reduced suspended solids significantly and removed some additional phosphorus; however, no additional reduction in total oxygen demand or in nitrogen was noted. Detailed analyses of costs for construction… more

Preliminary report on retardation factors and radionuclide migration

Description: Available data on distribution coefficients for the biologically important radionuclides present in high-level waste were used to estimate retardation factors (K/sub f/) for a mass transport hydrologic model. The radionuclides were divided into 3 groups: fission products with no sorption (K/sub f/ = 1), fission products with sorption (K/sub f/ = 10/sup 2/), and the actinides and their daughter products (K/sub f/ = 10/sup 4/). Minimum and maximum values were assigned the latter two groups. Uncer… more

The Use of Manganese Substituted Ferrotitanium Alloys for Energy Storage

Description: Experimental results are presented on properties of major practical importance in the utilization of manganese-substituted ferrotitanium alloys as hydrogen storage media. Consideration is given to (1) pressure-composition-temperature characteristics, (2) particle attrition properties, (3) effects of long-term cycling on alloy stability, (4) ease of activation and reactivation, and (5) effects of contaminants on alloy activity. The performance of ternary alloys is compared with that of titanium … more

Evaluation of the hazard associated with fabricating beryllium copper alloys

Description: Beryllium-copper alloys should be considered toxic materials and proper controls must be used when they are machined, heated, or otherwise fabricated. Air samples should be taken for each type of fabrication to determine the worker's exposure and the effectiveness of the controls in use. It has been shown that aerosols containing beryllium are generated during the four methods of fabrication tested, and that these aerosols can be reduced through local exhaust to undetectable levels. Considering… more

ISABELLE, accumulators, bunched beams and cosmictrons

Description: An elaboration of the ISABELLE concept as the model for a high energy, high luminosity proton-proton facility is given. Its place in the total high energy physics program is discussed. Certain features of the ISABELLE design which have not been consolidated, in particular injection and modes of beam operation, are considered. A new scheme is reviewed, one which could provide quick beam turn-on after construction, one in which there is a high probability of reaching and perhaps even exceeding th… more

Mass spectrometric analytical services and research activities to support coal-liquid characterization research. Quarterly report, September 9, 1976--December 8, 1976. [11 refs]

Description: Modification of the combined FI/EI ion source to permit operation in the FD mode is underway. Oxidation-reduction and activation cells were fabricated and assembly of the vacuum system for the activation cell is in progress. High- and low-voltage power supplies needed for emitter preparation were constructed. The sensitivity for field ionization of decane relative to that for ethylbenzene was measured as a function of binary mixture composition, ion-source temperature, and field strength. A gal… more
