A method to estimate the concentration of elements in smoke from burning vegetation growing in contaminated soil

Description: The Savannah River Site has areas where soil is contaminated with metals and/or radionuclides. Many of these areas are surrounded by native vegetation which is growing adjacent to the area and where the roots have penetrated into the contaminated soil of the area. In some cases vegetation has actually invaded the contaminated area. Even though the volume of contaminated vegetation is small, there are problems associated with its disposal. Vegetation decomposes quickly after burial and the volum… more

NQR-NMR studies of higher alcohol synthesis Cu-Co catalysts

Description: The primary concern of the study during this period has been to examine the origin and basis of the several nonconforming NMR lines reported in our earlier study. Previous studies by earlier investigators indicate that (a) the product distribution in the conversion of synthesis gas to liquid fuels is dependant on the copper/cobalt ratio and (b) that the catalytic results reported by different groups of investigators using the IFP prescription (4) are widely divergent. These observations prompte… more

(Neutron scattering studies of the high-temperature superconducting materials)

Description: The traveler was given beam time at the ILL to continue neutron scattering work on high-temperature superconductivity. The unique facilities at the ILL for both high-energy and low-energy neutron instrumentation made the experiments possible. The measurements consisted of two basic types. The first of these is the study of the nature of spin fluctuations in high-{Tc} materials. This work is fundamental to the mechanism that is responsible for the high-transition temperatures. The second consist… more

The effect of detonation curvature on cylindrical wall motion

Description: In the large scale analysis of explosive response, discrepancies have been found between the results predicted by a computer models using various sets of equation of state parameters derived from different experiments. In this report, we will present recent progress toward determining possible reasons for the differences. The system that we have modeled in this study is the cylinder test. Numerous researchers have used this test to study the work potential of detonating explosives for the trans… more

Wind tunnel test of Teledyne Geotech model 1564B cup anemometer

Description: The Department of Energy (DOE) Environment, Safety and Health Compliance Assessment (Tiger Team) of the Savannah River Site (SRS) questioned the method by which wind speed sensors (cup anemometers) are calibrated by the Environmental Technology Section (ETS). The Tiger Team member was concerned that calibration data was generated by running the wind tunnel to only 26 miles per hour (mph) when speeds exceeding 50 mph are readily obtainable. A wind tunnel experiment was conducted and confirmed th… more

Theoretical aspects of electroweak and other interactions in medium energy nuclear physics

Description: In the project under review, progress has been made on the problem of dynamic symmetries exhibited by mesons as color strings. A novel property of the vibrational states of heavy mesons, that of an approximate saturation of a particular spectroscopic interval, has been found as a fingerprint'' for linear quark confinement potentials. Progress has been continued in the study of electroweak excitation of the baryon resonances, including the use of Compton scattering.

Transrex 500 kW power supply transductor upgrades

Description: This paper describes various upgrades and tests done at the Research Division 500 kW Transrex power supply dc current transductors and chassis. The results of all modifications were measured on the same test setup with the same transductor head and chassis. Field testing of over one-hundred power supplies indicated that the results given in this paper are similar to the signals observed in the field within a factor of + or {minus} two. The dc transductors yield 10Vdc burden resistor voltage at … more

Alternatives for metal hydride storage bed heating and cooling

Description: The reaction of hydrogen isotopes with the storage bed hydride material is exothermic during absorption and endothermic during desorption. Therefore, storage bed operation requires a cooling system to remove heat during absorption, and a heating system to add the heat needed for desorption. Three storage bed designs and their associated methods of heating and cooling and accountability are presented within. The first design is the current RTF (Replacement Tritium Facility) nitrogen heating and … more

Harmonics suppression of vacuum chamber eddy current induced fields with application to the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Low Energy Booster (LEB) Magnets

Description: This memo presents the formulation of an expression for eddy currents induced in a thin-walled conductor due to a time-dependent electromagnet field excitation. Then follows an analytical development for prediction of vacuum chamber eddy current induced field harmonics in iron-core electromagnets. A passive technique for harmonics suppression is presented with specific application to the design of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Low Energy B (LEB) Magnets.

A novel concept for heat transfer fluids used in district cooling systems. Progress report, September 25, 1990--December 31, 1990

Description: Low-temperature phase-change materials (PCMS) were mixed with water to enhance the performance of heat transfer fluid. Several PCMs were tested in a laboratory-scale test loop to check their suitability to district cooling applications. The phase-change temperatures and latent heats of fusion of tetradecane, pentadecane, and hexadecane paraffin waxes were measured using a differential scanning calorimeter. The heat of fusion of these materials is approximately 60% of that of ice. They exhibit n… more
