Estimate of earth media shear strength at the Nevada Test Site

Description: A method is presented of estimating the effective shear strength of the fractured rock that surrounds a nuclear detonation. To do this, we measure the cavity radii from previous detonations. We also use numerical computer codes to model the explosion phenomenology and develop the functional relationship between the normalized cavity displacement and the normalized shear strength of the rock. In this sense, the computer codes serve as replica models that are dimensionally analyzed to interpret t… more

LOFT emergency core coolant thermal analysis Class I review

Description: The LOFT Emergency Core Coolant Piping Thermal Analysis was checked to insure that the calculations made would conservatively satisfy the requirements in the LOFT technical specifications. Some of the boundary conditions used have not been shown to be conservative and require review and possible re-analysis. One of the thermal models used could not be clearly related to a specific part of the piping geometry and requires further explanation. The remainder of the models, the use of the SIMIR cod… more

ISC origin times for announced and presumed underground nuclear explosions at several test sites

Description: Announced data for US and French underground nuclear explosions indicate that nearly all detonations have occurred within one or two tenths of a second after the minute. This report contains ISC origin-time data for announced explosions at two US test sites and one French test site, and includes similar data for presumed underground nuclear explosions at five Soviet sites. Origin-time distributions for these sites are analyzed for those events that appeared to be detonated very close to the min… more

Age changes in human bone: an overview

Description: The human skeleton steadily changes structure and mass during life because of a variety of internal and external factors. Extracellular substance and bone cells get old, characteristic structural remodeling occurs with age and these age-related changes are important in the discrimination between pathological and physiological changes. Perhaps 20 percent of the bone mass is lost between the fourth and the ninth decades, osteoblasts function less efficiently and gradual loss of bone substance is … more

Experimental study of the dynamic viscosity of some anhydrous silicate melts to 1953 K at 150 kPa. [Alluvium]

Description: The dynamic viscosity was measured for six anhydrous silicate melts, obtained by fusing various rocks collected from the Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site, from 1393 to 1953 K at 150 kPa. These silicate melts exhibit Newtonian behavior in this temperature interval. Experimental results indicate that tuff viscosity > alluvium viscosity > basalt viscosity. At 1673 K, viscosities of Schooner tuff (Ue20..mu..-330'), alluvium (U10ba), and Danny Boy basalt (Ue18q No. 2) are 28,460 Pa.s, 4,820 P… more

Atomic coherence created by a pulsed dye laser

Description: Level population as a function of laser pulse envelope area for an atom which could be approximated as a two level system was measured. An ideal two-level system under the action of an oscillating force is one of a few quantum mechanical systems for which the time-dependent Schroedinger equation can be solved exactly. The solution predicts that the population of the upper state, for a system which was entirely in the lower state at t = 0, varies as sin/sup 2/A, where A = ..integral../sub 0//sup… more

Model of emittance growth in a self-pinched beam

Description: A semi-phenomenological formula is proposed for the change of emittance of a self-pinched beam which is not matched to its equilibrium radius. Near equilibrium this formula, coupled with an envelope equation, yields the damped sausage oscillations observed in simulation and experiments. For a beam which is injected cold (no transverse velocity spread), the formula coincides with the analytically calculated initial growth of emittance. The basic theory is developed here and used to compute the l… more

Thermal analysis of mounting plate and instrument holder in upper core support structure for LOFT Core III

Description: The maximum temperature drop that could occur across the mounting plate or instrument holder is about 9/sup 0/F. This is based on conservative data and assumptions. Gamma heating was estimated from calculations for 55 MW operation; the value used was 0.015 Watts/gram of metal. The mounting plate is the restriction orifice on top of the upper end box on the center fuel assembly. The instrument holder is bolted to the top of this plate. Only steady state operation is considered.

The study considers a sodium-cooled breeder reactor system having a loop-type primary system configuration. A temperature range of 930 to 1050/sup 0/F in reactor outlet temperature is covered. Significant findings were that the use of the materials for the 930/sup 0/F reference design, i.e., a core material of 20% cold-worked 316 stainless steel, a primary piping material of 316SS, and a… more

Description: The NRC is developing a framework of regulations, criteria, and standards. Lawrence Livermore Laboratory provides broad technical support to the NRC for developing this regulatory framework, part of which involves site suitability criteria for solidified high-level wastes (SHLW).
