The Fabrication of Stainless Steel-Uranium Dioxide Fuel Elements

Description: Abstract: "Stainless steel-clad fuel sheet 0.020 in. thick with a 0.008-in. core of stainless steel plus UO2 was produced by roll cladding a powder metal compact. The effects of processing variables, core-matrix composition, quantity of oxide, and oxide particle size on the properties of the sheet were investigated. The strength and ductility of the core decreased sharply as the quantity of oxide in the core increased from 20 to 40 w/o. Over the range of matrix compositions investigated the par… more

An Exact Analysis of Limited Plane Plasma in a Magnetic Field

Description: Introduction: "Prior analyses of a plasma in a magnetic field have been limited, as far as the writer is aware, to cases in which the relative change in field over the orbital distance and the relative change in ion concentration are both small, or in which the relations have been viewed in a purely hydrodynamical way. The first approach excludes cases which can be of considerable interests, for it fails near a plasma edge. The second loses all sight of the structure imposed by the orbital moti… more

A brief review of major problems at Redox

Description: During the last few months the Redox plant has been plagued with an excessive number of problems which have resulted in its inability to meet forecasted production schedules in November 1953, January and February 1954. The following paragraphs are intended to indicate some of the problems faced at Redox and the steps that are being taken to remedy them. It should be emphasized that the plant has been operating far above original design capacity and this fact tends to aggravate some of the probl… more

An investigation at high subsonic speeds of the pressure distributions on a 45 degree sweptback vertical tail in sideslip with and without a 45 degree sweptback horizontal tail located on the fuselage center line

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the high-speed tunnel at high subsonic speeds and several angles of attack of the chordwise pressure distribution at six spanwise stations on a 45 degree sweptback, untapered vertical tail in sideslip. The presence of the horizontal tail slightly increased the value of section normal-force coefficients on the vertical tail but did not materially alter the nature of the load distribution.

Effects of Additives on Corrosion and Mass Transfer in Sodium Hydroxide - Nickel Systems Under Free-Convection Conditions

Description: Memorandum presenting a study of the effect of additives on the extent of corrosion and mass transfer in sodium hydroxide - "L" nickel systems. The extent of corrosion and mass transfer was determined by a measurement of the weight change of a specimen in the hot zone, and by metallographic examination of the specimen cross section. Results regarding the reproducibility, appearance of specimens, and additives having a detrimental effect, no effect, or a beneficial effect are provided.

Comparison of Experimental Hydrodynamic Impact Loads and Motions for a V-Step and a Transverse-Step Hydro-Ski

Description: Report presenting a comparison of the hydrodynamic impact loads and motions encountered in testing a V-step and a transverse-step flat-bottom hydro-ski with beam loadings of about 4.5. Testing occurred in smooth water over a range of velocities, flight-path angles, and fixed trims. Effect of Wedge-Type Boundary-Layer Diverters on Performance of Half-Conical Side Inlets at Mach Number 2.96

Description: Report presenting an investigation at Mach number 2.96 to study the effects of wedge-type boundary-layer removal on the performance of side inlets with half of a double-conical external-compression surface. Some of the parameters investigated were the wedge height, wedge inclined angle, wedge-tip position, and splitter-plate geometry. Two lengths of constant-area diffuser throat section were also considered.

Design and Experimental Investigation of Light-Weight Bases for Air-Cooled Turbine Rotor Blades

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the problem of air-cooled turbine rotor-blade weight reduction for aircraft gas turbines as part of the NACA turbine-cooling research program. A bulb-root-type blade-base design was achieved which utilized forming and brazing techniques in its manufacture and was combined with an axial-flow turbojet engine aerodynamic profile. Results regarding the sheet-metal bulb-root-type air-cooled base designs, air-cooled pinned-type base design, and some weight re… more

The chordwise pressure distributions, which were determined at various spanwise stations, indicate that the flow about the two configurations is the same. Results regarding basic pressure measurements and loading and aerodynamic c… more

Acceleration of high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine as determined from component performance characteristics 3: effect of turbine stator adjustment

Description: From Summary: "An analytical investigation was made to determine from component performance the effect of turbine stator adjustment on the acceleration characteristics of a typical high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine. Turbine stator adjustment was adequate to permit engine operation in the intermediate-speed range, but was less satisfactory than the relatively simple schemes of compressor-interstage and -outlet bleed."

Multiple over-all performance and rotating-stall characteristics of a 15-stage experimental axial-flow compressor at an intermediate speed

Description: From Summary: "The 15-stage experimental axial-flow compressor was investigated at 78.5 percent of design speed, which falls in the region of the surge-limit line discontinuity. In this region indications of multiple characteristic curves of compressor operation had been found. On the basis of previous stage-matching analyses, these multiple performance characteristics appear to be the result of multiple-valued stage performance characteristics."
