A Technical and Historical Analysis of Alban Berg's Sonata for Piano, op. 1

Description: This sonata by Alban Berg is a product of Arnold Schoenberg's teachings and is, indeed, a musical reflection of the Schoenberg of 1907-1908. At this time the musical thought of Schoenberg himself was in a state of metamorphosis, developing from the chromaticism of the late Romantic composers toward the twelve-tone technique which he was to formulate a few years later. The sonata, as a whole and above all, reflects the growth of an important composer, one who is perhaps the most important link b… more

Ariettes Oubilées and Fêtes Galantes, Series I and II by Claude Debussy

Description: Not only did Debussy find the Symbolist movement a source of inspiration for his artistic aims, he often selected his literary collaborators from them. Pelleas et Melisande, Prelude a l'Apres-midi d'un Faune, Chansons de Bilitis, Trois Pomes de Stephane Mallarme, Fetes Galantes, Ariettes Oubliees, all had Symbolist authors. Moreover, the poetic style of the Proses Lyriques, of which Debussy himself was the author, is in the Symbolist manner.

Symphony #1

Description: This symphony was composed for the purpose of communicating with a contemporary audience and not to please some unknown colleague or future generation. Therefore, experimentation with novel media or systems was rejected in favor of a more conventional approach.

Antiproton-Proton Cross Sections at 1.0, 1.25, and 2.0 BeV

Description: The antiproton--proton interaction was studied at three energies, 2.0, 1.25, and 0.98 Bev. Antiprotons produced internally in the Revatron and channeled externally by a system of bending magnets and quadrupoles were selected from background particles by using a gas Cherenkov counter and scintillation counters. At the two lower energies, an electrostatic-magnetic velocity spectrometer was used to reject background particles. A liquidhydrogen target was completely surrounded by scintillation coun… more

The Keyboard Ricercare in the Baroque Era: Volume 1

Description: This study seeks to examine the history of the ricercare, specifically in the baroque era. In this work, all types of keyboard compositions that utilize imitative counterpoint have been examined. Late baroque fugues have been examined to determine which characteristics of the earlier ricercare remained in general use and which specific compositions contain elements causing them to resemble strongly the parent form.

Symphony No. 1

Description: Symphony No. 1 is a three-movement work for orchestra. The movements have the following tempo indications: (I) Allegro ma non troppo, (II) Lento, and (III) Allegro giocoso. The composition is scored for 3 flutes (3rd flute interchangeable with piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, 2 bassoons, contra-bassoon, 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in B-flat, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba, percussion (timpani, snare drum, and triangle), and the usual complement of strings.

Cross-Section at 15.6 and 16.1 MeV

Description: The intent of this investigation is the determination of the values of the Cs-133 (n,2n)Cs-132 cross-section at neutron energies of 15.6 and 16.1 MeV. Neutrons of this energy are produced with comparative ease by means of the D-T reaction, in which deuterons of energy 500 and 750 keV, respectively, are impingent upon a tritium target.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectra of Some 1,2,4-triazoles

Description: In the work undertaken here, NMR has been used to ascertain the structure of some 1,2,4-triazoles. The investigation provides information concerning the structure of potentially tautomeric triazoles such as hydroxy- and aminotriazole. Connected with this aspect of triazole chemistry is the larger problem of mesohydric tautomerism. The present study also yields information for a comparison of substituent effects in triazoles, N-heteroaromatic substances and benzene.

Study of Pion-Pion Scattering from the Reaction $pi$$sup +$ + p $Yields$ $pi$$sup +$ + $pi$$sup +$ + n AT 1.25 AND 1.75 Bev/c

Description: The equipment and procedure used in measuring the distribution of energy and angle of recoil of neutrons from the reaction pi /sup +/ + p yields pi / sup +/ + pi /sup +/ + n for incident pion mome nta of 1.25 and 1.75 Bev/c are explained. Utilization of the plastic scintillator detectors is given particular attention. Data on the cross section for pion-pion scattering are presented and analyzed. (22 references.) (D.C.W.)

An Investigation of the Effectiveness of Programed Learning in the Teaching of Harmonic Dictation in a Beginning College Music Theory Course, Volume 1

Description: The problem of the study was to investigate the comparative effectiveness of two methods of teaching harmonic dictation to beginning college music students. The methods were (1) the conventional teacher-classroom approach as suggested by Robert Ottman's Elementary Harmony, and (2) a linear programed book to be used in conjunction with a series of tape recordings.

Chlorine Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Absorption of 3, 4, 5, 6 - Tetrachlorophthalimide and 1, 3, 6, 8 - Tetrachloropyrene

Description: In this study frequency modulation was used with a regenerative spectrometer and a super-regenerative spectrometer to detect the nuclear quadrupole resonance frequencies of chlorine in two commercially available compounds, 1, 3, 6, 8 - tetrachlorophyrene and 3, 4, 5, 6 - tetrachlorophthalimide.

Two Topics in Pion Physics. [Part] 1. Photoproduction of Neutral Pions From Complex Nuclei and the Pair-Correlation Function. [Part] 2. The Relative Rate of Absorption of Negative Pions in Hydrogen and Deuterium

Description: A simple theory of the photoproduction of pi /sup 0/ mesons from complex nuclei based on the impulse and closure approximation is studied. The theory is compared with an experiment of Goodwin, Anderson, and Kenney that shows the dependence of the number of decay gammas from pi /sup 0/ mesons photo- produced from various nuclei as a function of the atomic number at 45, 90, and 135 degrees for incident photon energies from threshold to 350 Mev. The dependence measured near threshold and at 45 deg… more

Direct Sums of Rings

Description: This paper consists of a study of the direct sum U of two rings S and T. Such a direct sum is defined as the set of all ordered pairs (s1, t1), where s1 is an arbitrary element in S and t1 is an arbitrary element in T.
