Still life in black and white: An intertextual interpretation of William Grant Still's "symphonic trilogy."

Description: William Grant Still's musical achievements are legion. Because he was the first African American to break the color line in America's concert halls, Still earned the sobriquet "Dean of Negro Composers." Paradoxically, Still's reception suffers from this list of "firsts." The unintended consequence of cataloging his achievements venerates his position as an iconoclast while detracting critical attention from his music. Conversely, if we ignore the social context in which Still produced his m… more

Measurement of the t anti-t production cross section in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: We present the measurement of the t{bar t} cross section in the lepton plus jets channel with {ge} 1 and {ge} 2 secondary vertex tags. We use the scalar sum of transverse energies of the event (H{sub T}) to discriminate t{bar t} from the other backgrounds. We also use the transverse mass of the leptonic W-boson (M{sub T}{sup W}) to further reduce the Non-W backgrounds. We use a combination of data and Monte Carlo to estimate the backgrounds from electroweak processes, single top, fake leptons, … more

Measurement of top anti-top cross section in proton - anti-proton collider at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: Discovery of the top quark in 1995 at the Fermilab Tevatron collider concluded a long search following the 1977 discovery of bottom (b) quark [1] and represents another triumph of the Standard Model (SM) of elementary particles. Top quark is one of the fundamental fermions in the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and is the weak-isospin partner of the bottom quark. A precise measurement of top pair production cross-section would be a test of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) prediction. Pre… more

A Search for New Physics with High Mass Tau Pairs in proton anti-proton collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV at CDF

Description: We present the results of a search for new particles decaying to tau pairs using the data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 195 pb{sup -1} collected from March 2002 to September 2003 with the CDF detector at the Tevatron. Hypothetical particles, such as Z' and MSSM Higgs bosons can potentially produce the tau pair final state. We discuss the method of tau identification, and show the signal acceptance versus new particle mass. The low-mass region, dominated by Z {yields} {tau}{tau}, … more

First observation of dijet events with an antiproton tag at s**(1/2) = 1.96 TeV using the D0 Forward Proton Detector

Description: The Forward Proton Detector (FPD) is a new sub-system of the D0 detector, a 5000 ton particle physics detector located at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. The FPD was implemented for the Tevatron Run II and gives access to a wide range of diffractive scattering processes, where one or both of the beam particles remain intact. The analysis described in this thesis makes use of the dipole spectrometer of the FPD to tag outgoing antiprotons in events that have a dijet signature in… more

Search for electroweak single top quark production with cdf in proton - anti-proton collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: In this thesis two searches for electroweak single top quark production with the CDF experiment have been presented, a cutbased search and an iterated discriminant analysis. Both searches find no significant evidence for electroweak single top production using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 162 pb{sup -1} collected with CDF. Therefore limits on s- and t-channel single top production are determined using a likelihood technique. For the cutbased search a likelihood functi… more

Search for a new charged heavy vector boson decaying to an electron-neutrino pair in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96 TeV

Description: We present results on a search for a heavy charged vector boson, W', decaying to an electron-neutrino pair in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 205 pb{sup -1}. We found no evidence of this decay channel, and set 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching fraction assuming the light neutrino. We also set the limit on the W' boson mass at M{sub W'} > 788 GeV/c{sup 2}, assuming the stand… more

Measurement of the top - anti-top Production Cross Section at s**(/1/2) = 1.96-TeV in the e + jets Final State of proton anti-proton Collisions at the Tevatron

Description: We discuss the measurement of the cross section for t{bar t} production in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV in e+jets final states observed at the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Our result is based on data collected from the June 2002 to September 2003 period of Run II of the p{bar p} Collider. In the Standard Model, the top quark is expected to decay mainly into a W boson and a b quark. The W boson can decay subsequently into a lepton and its neutrino or a q{bar q} quark-a… more

Angular correlations in beauty production at the Tevatron at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

Description: Measurements of the b quark production cross section at the Tevatron and at Hera in the final decades of the 20th century have consistently yielded higher values than predicted by Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD. This discrepancy has led to a large efforts by theorists to improve theoretical calculations of the cross sections and simulations of b quark production. As a result, the difference between theory and experiment has been much reduced. New measurements are needed to test the development… more

Search for Associated Chargino-Neutralino Production in Proton-Antiproton Collisions at 1.96 TeV

Description: The search for a fundamental theory of matter and forces in the universe has ever since attracted the interest of physicists. The large success of the gauge theories in the description of low-energy phenomena nourishes the hope that gauge symmetries are the clue to a unified description of all fundamental processes at high energy scales. Particle collision experiments of the past decades have probed the structure of matter with increasing resolution. The phenomena observed in collision experime… more

Computational Study and Analysis of Structural Imperfections in 1D and 2D Photonic Crystals

Description: Dielectric reflectors that are periodic in one or two dimensions, also known as 1D and 2D photonic crystals, have been widely studied for many potential applications due to the presence of wavelength-tunable photonic bandgaps. However, the unique optical behavior of photonic crystals is based on theoretical models of perfect analogues. Little is known about the practical effects of dielectric imperfections on their technologically useful optical properties. In order to address this issue, a fin… more
