L-asparaginase II Production by Escherichia coli

Description: Growth of Escherichia coli A-l under aerobic conditions in an enriched medium with a total amount of 0.2 per cent glucose was biphasic and asparaginase II activity was detected after depletion of ammonia from the growth medium in the second phase of growth. Glucose was exhausted two hours before ammonia and three hours before asparaginase II activity was detected. The concentration of 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate was found to fluctuate when the dissolved oxygen in the medium reached a l… more

The Rotational Spectra of Propyne in the Ground, V₁₀=1, V₁₀=2, and V₉=1 Vibrational States

Description: The problem of a vibrating-rotating polyatomic molecule is treated, with emphasis given to the case of molecules with C_3v symmetry. It is shown that several of the gross features of the rotational spectra of polyatomic molecules in excited vibrational states can be predicted by group theoretical considerations. Expressions for the rotational transition frequencies of molecules of C_3v symmetry in the ground vibrational state, singly excited degenerate vibrational states, and doubly excited deg… more

Isomerization Reactions in Organosilicon Chemistry

Description: Dimethylsilene, generated from the thermal gas phase reaction of 1,1-dimethyl-1-silacyclobutane, reacts with alkynes to produce silacyclobutenes or acyclic silanes. The temperature dependence of the product ratios have been determined and the relative reactivities of three different alkynes toward the 1,1-dimethylsilene has been determined. 1-Hydrido-1-methylsilene has been generated by gas phase thermal decomposition from three different precursors. Trapping studies with butadiene and trimethy… more

pH Dependence of the Kinetic Parameters for the Oxalacetate Decarboxylation and Pyruvate Reduction Reactions Catalyzed by Malic Enzyme

Description: Ascaris suum NAD-malic enzyme catalyzes the decarboxylation of oxalacetate and reduction of pyruvate. Thus, the present classification (E.C. 1.1.1.39) for this enzyme should be changed to E.C. 1.1.1.38. In the absence of nucleotide, both the chicken liver NADP-malic enzyme and Ascaris suum NAD-malic enzymes catalyze the decarboxylation of oxalacetate. A study of the pH dependence of kinetic parameters for oxalacetate decarboxylation and pyruvate reduction was carried out for the NAD(P)-malic en… more

Investigation of the Developmental Profile of Chromosomal Proteins in Zea Mays

Description: Histone proteins were examined during development in the meiotic elongate and a genetically close line N6HT. Histones were also extracted from an F1 (el x N6Ht). Comparisonc beteen the histone samples from each line of N6HT and elongate, and the F1 for leaf, root, and stem were inconclusive. A tassel sample form elongate exhibited a markedly slower migrating band that was not present in N6HT. The histone profiles of elongate and N6HT also differed. Each line N6HT and elongate exhibited three pr… more

The Relationship Between Pace Characteristics of Distance Runs and Criterion Measures of Endurance

Description: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between treadmill time, maximal oxygen consumption and pace characteristics of the 1.5 and 3 mile runs and to compare the distances and pace characteristics as predictors of aerobic capacity. Subjects were 70 college aged males, ages 18 to 25, enrolled in jogging and conditioning classes at North Texas State University. Three tests were administered: the 1.5 mile run, the 3 mile run and the Bruce treadmill test. The data were analyzed us… more

Attrition After Successful Completion of Doctoral Qualifying Examinations: An Analysis of Characteristics and Attitudes of Doctoral Graduates and Non-Graduates

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine whether differences exist between characteristics and attitudes of graduates and those of non-graduates of doctoral programs in education. The subjects were the 256 students who had successfully completed the qualifying examinations in the College of Education at North Texas State University during the years of 1978 through 1980. Although the data findings from this study are too numerous to list within the restrictions of this abstract, the most notab… more

Catalytic Calcination of Calcium Carbonate

Description: The calcination of calcium carbonate in a cement or a lime kiln uses approximately two to four times the theoretical quantity of energy predicted from thermodynamic calculation depending upon the type of the kiln used (1.4 x 10^6 Btu/ton theoretical to 6 x 10^6 Btu/ton actual). The objective of this research was to attempt to reduce the energy required for the calcination by 1. decreasing the calcination temperature of calcium carbonate, and/or 2. increasing the rate of calcination at a specifi… more

Synthetic Applications of Ketene Cycloadditions: Natural and Novel Pyrethroid Insecticides

Description: A new synthetic route to natural and novel pyrethroid acids was developed utilizing ketene cycloaddition which is a significant improvement over existing syntheses. The newly synthesized pyrethroid acids were converted to pyrethroid esters and used to study structure-activity relationships. The cycloaddition of dichloroketene with 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene yields (2+2) cycloaddition products, 2,2-dichlorocyclobutanones. The reductive removal of one chlorine atom from these cycloaddition produc… more

A Content Analysis of Citations to Four Prominent Philosophers of Science in Selected Sociology Journals

Description: Numerous studies have attempted to measure scientists' influence by measuring the quantity of citations to their works. The problem with "citation counting," as it is called, is that it assumes that each listing of an author in a citation index is equal to another without bothering to explore the substantive uses of citations in the source article. The present study attempts to alleviate this problem by content analysis of citations in a limited sphere: reference to major philosophers of scienc… more

Impact of Query Specification Mode and Problem Complexity on Query Specification Productivity of Novice Users of Database Systems

Description: With the increased demand for the utilization of computerized information systems by business users, the need for investigating the impact of various user interfaces has been well recognized. It is usually assumed that providing the user with assistance in the usage o-f a system would significantly increase the user's productivity. There is, however, a dearth of systematic inquiry into this commonly held notion to verify its validity in a scientific fashion. The purpose of this study is to inve… more

An Historical Inquiry Into the Development of Higher Education in Ghana 1948-1984: a Study of the Major Factors That Have Controlled and Inhibited the Development of the Universities of Ghana

Description: Universities in many industrialized countries including Japan, and Australia, have enabled those countries to achieve rapid economic and social advancement. However, this is untrue for the universities of Ghana, due to the country's ailing economy, its continued dependence on foreign manpower, aid, and material goods. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to illuminate the major factors and events that have controlled and inhibited the development of higher education in Ghana from 1948 to 1… more

Religious Inventory for the Assessment of Psychologically Healthy and Unhealthy Beliefs

Description: The problem concerns determining whether healthy and unhealthy religious beliefs can be distinguished. A 150 item Religious Beliefs Inventory (RBI) was developed to assess healthy and unhealthy religious beliefs. In a pilot study, RBI scales were developed and the MMPI-168 was used as the criteria measure. Fifteen of the 23 RBI scales yielded an average reliability of .79 and an average validity of .48 for 95 undergraduate university subjects. The present study seeks to cross-validate the resul… more
