Nucleus--nucleus total cross sections for light nuclei at 1.55 and 2.89 GeV/ C/nucleon

Description: Total cross sections have been measured for protons, deuterons, alphas, and $sup 12$C on hydrogen, deuterium, helium, and carbon targets at 1.55 and 2.89 GeV/c/nucleon using the ''good geometry'' transmission method. In addition, the inelastic cross sections and elastic slope parameters were measured for reactions initiated by deuterons, alphas, and $sup 12$C. The factorization relation sigma/ sub T/(AA) = sigma/sub T/(AB)$sup 2$/sigma/sub T/(BB) is violated for some of these reactions. The res… more

Proton--proton analyzing power measurements at 16 MeV

Description: Few attempts have been made to measure accurately the proton-proton analyzing powers at low energies. With the advent of polarized particle beams the measurement can now be made with high accuracy. Analyzing powers were measured at nine scattering angles from 10$sup 0$ to 35$sup 0$ in the laboratory system. As a check on systematic errors, analyzing power measurements were also made by scattering protons from $sup 4$He. In the p Vector-p case the measured values are in very good agreement with … more

Comparison between phase shift derived and exactly calculated nucleon--nucleon interaction matrix elements. [Tables]

Description: A comparison is made between matrix elements calculated using the uncoupled channel Sussex approach to second order in DWBA and matrix elements calculated using a square well potential. The square well potential illustrated the problem of the determining parameter independence balanced with the concept of phase shift difference. The supersoft core potential was used to discuss the systematics of the Sussex approach as a function of angular momentum as well as the relation between Sussex generat… more

Vibrational inelasticity in H$sub 2$ collisions with He and Li$sup +$

Description: The partially averaged version of classical S-matrix theory was applied to three-dimensional collisions of H$sub 2$ with He and Li$sup +$. For H$sub 2$- Li$sup +$, cross-sections for the de-excitation of H$sub 2$ from (n$sub 1$,j$sub 1$) = (1,0) to the ground vibrational manifold were computed at a total energy of 1.2 eV and compared to previously done coupled channel calculations of Schaefer and Lester. The agreement is very good. For H$sub 2$-He, the Kutzelnigg- Tsapline interaction potential… more

K vacancy production in medium-Z heavy ion collisions

Description: During slow encounters between projectile and target atoms, the electronic atomic wave functions of the two collision partners distort and form molecular orbitals (MOs). K vacancy formation in slow heavy-ion collisions, which occur when electrons are excited out of the 2psigma and 1ssigma MOs, is considered. Experimental work using 200 MeV Kr ions is described. The main interest is the excitation of electrons from the 1ssigma MO. The 1ssigma vacancy production is only observed in very asymmetri… more

Cooling of interstellar formaldehyde by collision with helium: an accurate quantum mechanical calculation

Description: In order to test a collisional pumping model as a mechanism for cooling the 6 cm and 2 cm doublets of interstellar formaldehyde, a quantum mechanical scattering calculation is performed. To obtain the intermolecular interaction between H$sub 2$CO($sup 1$A$sub 1$) and He($sup 1$S) two calculations are performed, a Hartree-Fock (HF) potential surface and a configuration interaction (CI) surface. A basis set of better than ''triple zeta plus polarization'' quality is used to compute the HF portion… more

The Relationship of Self-Esteem and the Development of Interpersonal Spacing in Elementary School Age Children

Description: The purpose of this study was to examine three experimental hypotheses: (1) each grade level in the study will show greater physical distances in interpersonal spacing as the grade level increases in both child-to-child and child-to-adult relationships, (2) interpersonal spacing will be greater in child-to-adult relationships than in child-to-child relationships, and (3) there will be a correlation between a child's self-esteem and his interpersonal spacing in both child-to-child and child-to-a… more

The History of Underground Communication in Russia Since the Seventeenth Century

Description: The purposes of this study were (1) to identify the reasons for and the processes of underground communication in Russia since the seventeenth century and (2) to utilize the information to interpret the clandestine media's significance. The study concluded: (1) underground media have evolved because Russian governments have oppressed free speech; (2) dissidents have shared similarities in the methods of illicit communications; (3) whereas the earlier clandestine press tended to be either litera… more

Fe--12Ni--4Co--2Mo--.05Ti alloy for use at 77$sup 0$K and below

Description: A variant of the maraging class of steels is proposed for application at 77$sup 0$K and below where a combination of very high strength and good toughness is required. The alloy has a composition of Fe-12Ni-4Co-2Mo-0.05Ti where low interstitial content. The as quenched and quenched and aged structures were completely martensitic with a prior austenitic grain size of 10 to 12 $mu$m. This structure had a Y.S. of 138.5 ksi and 154 ksi before and after aging respectively. All aging was done at 444$… more

Precluding the S- in Establishing Color Discriminations in Autistic Children

Description: A procedure in which the S- was prevented from being responded to, by electro-magnets, was used to establish color discriminations. The procedure was modified in Situation 1, to include the prevention of responses to the S+ if the S- was responded to first. The original procedure and modified procedure were used in Situation 1, with only the modified procedure being used in Situations 2 and 3. The procedure of reinforcing responses to the S+ and extinguishing responses to the S-, through nonrei… more

A Comparison of Self Concepts Among "Starter" and "Substitute" Female College Athletes in Selected Varsity Sports

Description: The purposes of the study were (1) to determine if differences exist between the self concepts of female intercollegiate starting and substitute athletes and between members of team and individual sports and (2) to determine if a significant relationship exists between coaches' ratings of an athlete and the athletes' self concepts. Subjects were forty-five college women who met the established criteria. The testing instrument was the Tennessee Self Concept Scale. Data were analyzed by the two-w… more

Collision Broadening of Microwave Spectral Lines of Monomeric Formaldehyde and Formic Acid

Description: Line width parameters for a number of spectral lines in the pure rotational spectrum of formaldehyde (CH20) and formic acid (HCOOH) have been measured using a sourcemodulated microwave spectrograph. All transitions studied in this investigation were of the type ΔJ=O (i.e. Q-branch transitions), with ΔK-1=0 and ΔK+1 =+l. The center frequencies of the measured lines varied from 8662.0 MHz to 48612.70 MHz. The experimentally determined collision diameters for self broadening interactions involving… more

The Use of Acoustical Analysis for Identification of Client Stress Within the Counseling Session

Description: The problem of the study was to identify stress arising in psychological counseling by identifying variations in the vocal pitch (fundamental frequency level) of clients' voices. Hypotheses were established to (1) determine the number of categories describing acoustically similar clients' responses within the counseling session and compare these categories with ratings of client stress, (2) determine the relationship between ratings of client stress and different fundamental frequency character… more

High statistics study of omega$sup 0$ production at 6 GeV/c

Description: The spin-projected cross sections for $omega$$sup 0$ production at 6 GeV/ c were measured in a counter-spark chamber experiment at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron of Argonne National Laboratory. Results are presented for a sample of 25,000 $omega$$sup 0$ events, and critical tests are shown for any residual background. The reaction is dominated by the s-channel natural-parity helicity one projection (rho$sub 11$ + rho/sub 1-1) dsigma/dt which shows a turnover in the forward direction and no stron… more
