Fluid Spheres in General Relativity: Exact Solutions and Applications to Astrophysics

Description: Exact solutions to Einstein's field equations in the presence of matter are presented. A one parameter family of interior solutions for a static fluid is discussed. It is shown that these solutions can be joined to the Schwarzschild exterior, and hence represent fluid spheres of finite radius. Contained within this family is a set of solutions which are gaseous spheres defined by the vanishing of the density at the surface. One such solution yields an analytic expression which corresponds to th… more

Learned Helplessness and Dependence on the Judgment of Others

Description: The relationship between learned helplessness (Seligman, 1975) and dependence on the judgment of others, as measured by an Asch-type conformity task, was investigated. Relevant constructs were reviewed: helplessness, locus of control, depression, self-esteem, dependency, and Campbell's (1961) epistemological weighting hypothesis. It was reasoned that experience with uncontrollable outcomes would not only result in learned helplessness, but also subjects' confidence in their own ability to contr… more

Retail Site Selection Using Multiple Regression Analysis

Description: Samples of stores were drawn from two chains, Pizza Hut and Zale Corporation. Two different samples were taken from Pizza Hut. Site specific material and sales data were furnished by the companies and demographic material relative to each site was gathered. Analysis of variance tests for linearity were run on the three regression equations developed from the data and each of the three regressions equations were found to have a statistically significant linear relationship. Statistically signifi… more

Eckart frame motions and molecular vibrations

Description: This dissertation deals with motions of the Eckart frame in relation to molecular vibrations. The angular motion and the angular acceleration of the Eckart frame are treated. A technique for taking the first and second differentials of real symmetric eigenvalue problems is developed. This technique is applied to the first differential of the Eckart frame matrix.
