An Investigation into the Determinants of Performance in the Dual-Fund Industry in the United States from Inception Through 1973

Description: This research is a systematic, in depth empirical test of the strong form of the efficient market hypothesis (EMH) using the dual-fund industry as the research subject. Unlike most strong-form EMH research, this study deals with a small, homogeneous sector of the investment company industry with a comparable origin date. To obtain homogeneity of the research subjects, the sample size is necessarily small (7), thus, making it difficult to find statistically significant results. In general, portf… more

Aspects of the Thermal Ecology of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides) in North Central Texas

Description: The coefficient of body temperature change (K) ranged from -0.53 to -0.072 for bass weighing 73-1440 g. The double log regression of K on weight was similar to that reported for other poikilotherms (slope = -0.57; R = 0.93). Fingerling bass were eurythermal, being capable of surviving instantaneous temperature changes over a 20 C range at acclimation temperatures of 15, 25 and 30 C and over a 15 C range at acclimation temperatures of 20 and 35 C. Preferred temperatures for adult bass measured i… more

Learned Helplessness and Internal-External Locus of Control in the Elderly

Description: The present research has focused on an often-neglected segment of society—the aged. A number of phenomena which appear relevant to a study of aging have been discussed and the pertinent literature reviewed. Specifically, learned helplessness, depression, internal-external locus of control, and disengagement versus activity have been examined. The present research was divided into two studies. Study Number 1 has investigated internal-external locus of control in an elderly sample and related it … more

R₀ Spaces, R₁ Spaces, And Hyperspaces

Description: The purpose of this paper is to further investigate R0 spaces, R1 spaces, and hyperspaces. The R0 axiom was introduced by N. A. Shanin in 1943. Later, in 1961, A. S. Davis investigated R0 spaces and introduced R1 spaces. Then, in 1975, William Dunham further investigated R1 spaces and proved that several well-known theorems can be generalized from a T2 setting to an R1 setting. In Chapter II R0 and R1 spaces are investigated and additional theorems that can be generalized from a T2 setting to a… more

Failure of the Warrior-Hero in Shakespeare's Political Plays

Description: The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of the warrior-hero ideal as it evolves in Shakespeare's English and Roman plays, and its ultimate failure as a standard for exemplary conduct. What this study demonstrates is that the ideal of kingship that is developed in the English histories, especially in the Second Tetralogy, and which reaches its zenith in Henry V, is quite literally overturned in three Roman plays--Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus. The met… more

The Effect of Group Assertiveness Training on Selected Cognitive Variables

Description: This study was conducted to investigate whether cognitive variables (as measured by six self-report inventories) covaried with changes in behavior following group assertiveness training as postulated by several assertiveness training theorists and practitioners. Statistical analysis of the data did not support any of the hypotheses. No significant differences were found between the groups on any of the self-report measures or the behavioral ratings, although experimental group subjects consiste… more

Effects of a Symbolic Modeling Procedure on Seventh-Grade Socially Withdrawn Children

Description: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a symbolic modeling procedure upon the social adjustment of socially-withdrawn seventh-grade students. The three hypotheses investigated in this study were the following. I. At the conclusion of the experimental period, the mean number of social interactions will be significantly greater for students in the experimental condition than for students in either the placebo or the control condition. II. At the conclusion of the experi… more

Voiception: a Theoretical Study Employing the Highest Cognitive-Affective Processes in Vocal Pedagogy

Description: The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of developing a theory in vocal pedagogy, voiception, which could provide teaching techniques with tangibility for gaining control of both voluntary and involuntary functions of the singing act. This study appears to show that feeling tone and cognition are innately involved with singing, since the vocal instrument is actually a part of the singer. Analysis of the sung vowel through the singing sensation is the connecting link for g… more

Description: This study was an experimental design, using twenty-two variables, twelve covariates, and six criterion measures. The purpose of the study was the effect of the use of selected transcription drills in beginning shorthand on the ability of students to produce both typewritten copy and mailable letters from shorthand notes. The bases for comparison were five minute timed transcription tests, three-minute dictation tests, and thirty-minute mailable letter production tests, of both previewed and un… more

The Impact of a Model Cities Program on the Convergence of Crime Rates in a Model City Area and Residual Areas

Description: One purpose of the national Model Cities Program was to reduce the incidence of crime and delinquency in poverty blighted areas to levels prevailing in the remainder of the community. A measurable goal projected by the Austin program was to reduce crime in its Model City Area (in comparison to the rest of the city) by at least 8.73 per cent during the operational years of the program. The central problem of the study was to examine the relationships between official crime rates in the Austin Mo… more

Inversion-Asymmetry Splitting of the Conduction Band in N-Type Indium Antimonide

Description: The origin of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect, the strain theory developed by Bir and Pikus, and a simple, classical beating-effects model are discussed. The equipment and the experimental techniques used in recording the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations of n-type indium antimonite are described. The analysis of the experimental data showed that the angular anisotropy of the period of SdH oscillations at zero stress was unmeasurable for low concentration samples as discussed by other workers. Thus t… more

T-Sets of Normed Linear Spaces

Description: This paper is a study of T-sets of normed linear spaces. Geometrical properties of normed linear spaces are developed in terms of intersection properties shared by a subcollection of T-sets of the space and in terms of special spanning properties shared by each T-set of a subcollection of T-sets of the space. A characterization of the extreme points of the unit ball of the dual of a normed linear space is given in terms of the T-sets of the space. Conditions on the collection of T-sets of a nor… more

A Program of Mexican Literature for Graduate University Students

Description: The problem of this study is that of developing a program of study of Mexican literature at the graduate level at North Texas State University. The study of literature and culture is approached by probing into the influences on the thinking of the Mexican and by using an in-depth study, rather than an "anthology" approach to teaching. The findings of the study indicate a need for an upper level course in Mexican literature at North Texas State University. Therefore, the following recommendation… more
