The Admittance and Transfer Functions of Solid Core Electromagnets

Description: The admittance and transfer functions of large, solidcore electromagnets were determined. The effects of eddy currents and hysteresis were considered in deriving the functions. The study was concerned with the type of magnet employed in nuclear physics research which requires very precise regulation of the magnetic field. The study originated during the design of an analyzing magnet regulator for the ORNL 63-inch cyclotron. (W.D.M.)

A Study of Spectrophotometric Methods for the Determination of Osmium

Description: The development of rapid, selective, and sensitive methods for the determination of osmium in liquid samples is reported. The specific application of primary interest was the estimation of microgram or milligram quantities of osmium in homogeneous reactcr fuel solutions which contain uranyl sulfate as the major component and corrosion products of stainless steel as minor components. A Comparison of Christopher Marlowe's Edward II and William Shakespeare's Richard II

Description: This study purports to examine several areas of similarity between the chronicle history plays by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. Edward II and Richard II are alike in many ways, most strikingly in the similarity of the stories themselves. But this is a superficial likeness, for there are many other likenesses--in purpose, in artistry, in language--which demonstrate more clearly than the parallel events of history the remarkable degree to which these plays resemble each other.

Selective Lipid Absorption

Description: An experiment was designed to study in the same animal any preferential absorption of a free fatty acid in the presence of a triglyceride of the same fatty acid. Rats were administered a mixture of free fatty acid and its triglyceride labeled with carbon-13 and carbon-14 respectively. Each isotope in the fed lipid and in the lipid recovered from the gastrointestinal tract was measured. The isotope effect, if any, was studied by administering a mixture of palmitic acid-1-C13 and palmitic acid-1-… more

A Comparison of Physics and Psychology Majors on FIRO-B Variables

Description: It is the basic assumption of this study that a relationship exists between the interpersonal needs of inclusion, control, and affection and occupational choice as indicated by college major. Studies in the area of vocational choice have largely dealt with people who are practicing the vocation, leaving doubt as to whether people are attracted to the vocation as a result of need-satisfaction behavior, or whether the people determine their orientation by practicing the occupation. The need for f… more

The Confederate Naval Department and its Operation at New Orleans

Description: Many books have been written on the battles of the Civil War. Most of these deal only with engagements between the armies; little has been written concerning the Confederate Navy. A System for Measurement of Negative-Ion Charge-Exchange Cross Sections

Description: A radio-frequency positive-ion source and a fifty-kilovolt linear accelerator were designed and constructed in order to produce sizable quantities of hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, neon, and argon. Plans were then made to equip this ion source with charge-exchange apparatus suitable for charge-exchange cross-sectional measurements. It is the purpose of this paper to present the design of the equipment and to present operational knowledge of the equipment and of ion beams which are producible.
