A Water Quality Study of Lake Texoma

Description: A series of four stations for sampling the waters of the Red Rivers and Lake Texoma was established. Water samples from top, middle, and bottom levels of these four stations were taken on monthly intervals during periods of homothermousity and on two-week intervals during periods of thermal stratification. These samples were analysed for the cations sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and for the anions normal carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride, nitrate, water hardness (expressed … more

An Evaluative Study of the Grasslands of the R.J. McMurry Ranch, Denton County, Texas

Description: It is the purpose of this problem to classify the four major pastures of the McMurry ranch using the discussed classification system. The definite measurable qualities characterizing each condition of the system are used extensively in this study. The problem is concerned also with the observation of results of misuse, the present practices that could result in further depletion of portions of the McMurry ranch, and procedures being employed at the present time aimed toward the restoration of t… more

Factors Affecting Pigment Production in Mycobacterium rhodocrous

Description: This study was undertaken in order to isolate and identify the pigment, if possible, and to determine the effect of substrate, substrate concentration, light exposure, and pH on pigment production in this organism.

The Effects of Selected Algicides and Some Coordination Complexes upon the Apparent Photosynthesis of Chlorella Pyrenoidosa

Description: Many experiments have been performed with the Warburg apparatus, or variations of this manometric technique, since Warburg's experiments (52, 53) where the effects of cyanides upon dark reactions and of urethanes upon light reactions of photosynthesis were demonstrated. The same basic techniques were utilized in this research in attempting to determine the effects of some coordination complexes upon the apparent photosynthetic rate of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. A second goal of the present paper wa… more

Serological Characteristics of Coagulase Positive and Negative Staphylococci

Description: For this work, the decision was made to contrast two serological tests, that of the tube agglutination technique and the fluorescent antibody technique for correlation with the coagulase and other characteristics of Staphylococcus strains. This has been a preliminary survey in the hope that as further knowledge is obtained about the staphylococci, grouping of the organisms will become more routine and relatively less complex.

A Serological Study of the Antigenic Fractions of the Aerobic Actinomycetes

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to alleviate this confusion by first testing means of separating the antigenic components of the aerobic actinomycetes--obtaining, if possible, a monospecific antigen. Antisera produced from these monospecific antigens will then be tested for their possible use in the serological grouping of the aerobic actinomycetes.

Factors Involved in the Antibiotic Sensitivity of Staphylococcus Aureus

Description: It was the purpose of the present investigation to determine if sensitivity to other antibiotics can likewise be affected by subjecting S. aureus to heparin contact. It is of special interest in this problem to determine whether heparin in some manner affects the combining process of penicillin with the cells of several strains of S. aureus.

The Effect of Repeated Antigen Injections on the C' and C'4 Titers in Guinea Pig Serum

Description: In this study the effects of repeated antigen injections on total complement (C') and C'4 of guinea pig serum were investigated to determine if constant antigenic stimulation would show changes in the C' and C'4 titers. Attempts were also made to correlate any changes with variations in antibody titers during the repeated antigen injections.

Some Physiological Effects of Chlorine upon Two Chlorine Resistant Algae

Description: This research is concerned specifically with the growth of two selected algae found surviving in chlorinated water in outdoor swimming pools. Unialgal cultures were used to determine the free chlorine residuals that these algae were able to tolerate.

The Life Cylce of an Aquatic Actinomycete

Description: The purpose of this investigation was an attempt to clarify the relatives taxonomic position of and to formulate some of the basic cyclic morphological and physiological processes occurring in an aquatic actinomycete possessing streptomycetal characteristics.

Colonial Variations of a Mucoid Strain of Staphylococcus Aureus

Description: It was the purpose of the present investigation to demonstrate the selection of a variant of one strain of Staphylococcus aureus by altering certain environmental factors, and to study that variant as to biochemical activities and capsule formation.

Pressure-Flow Relationships in the Isolated Cerebral Circulation of the Dog

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the pressure-flow relationships in the isolated canine cerebral vascular bed. These relationships in vessels which supply an organ surrounded by bone are theoretically influenced by limiting factors which are not present in those vessels surrounded by soft tissue. An evaluation of the extent of these limitations is essential to thorough understanding of the dynamics of the cerebral vascular bed.

Pleomorphism in Selected Genera of Algae

Description: It is the purpose of this study to ascertain what environmental factors might cause morphological changes exhibited by certain algae, also to determine if this variation in morphology is vegetative, reproductive, or artifactual in nature, and to show what effects these changes in morpohology might have on classification of the organisms in question.

Responses to Diets High in Phenylalanine Compounds as Genetic Parameters in Mice

Description: The induction of phenylketonuria in mice through the use of excess dietary phenylalanine is an area in which limited research has been done. This study intends to pursue further work in this area, more specifically, to study the effects of excess dietary phenylalanine and the phenylalanine analogue A.P.B.A. (2-amino-3-phenyl butanoic acid) (7) on brain serotonin and brain norepinephrine. In addition, the effects of these two compounds on the incidence of audiogenic seizures will be explored.

Development of Range Condition Classes for Coleman County, Texas

Description: This paper deals with a study of the rangelands in Coleman County just west south and west of the Western Cross Timbers of Texas. This problem consists of classifying certain rangelands in this area according to whether they are excellent, fair, good, or poor, the chief basis for which is their deterioration.
