Experiments on Drag of Revolving Disks, Cylinders and Streamline Rods at High Speeds

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation concerned primarily with the extension of test data on the drag of revolving disks, cylinders, and streamline rods to high Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers. Finite-Element Analysis of a Thick-Wall Tube Containing a Crater-Like Surface Flaw

Description: A three-dimensional finite-element elastic analysis is carried out for a thick-wall tube (as sued in typical LMFBR steam generators) that contains a surface flaw in the form of a paraboloid of revolution. Effects of the depth and aspect ratio of the flaw on the stress distribution and stress concentration in the tube are explored.

Investigation of Reactivity Anomalies in EBR-II

Description: A data-collection and advisory team was formed to investigate observations of power reactivity decrement (PRD) and reactivity loss rate (RLR) obtained during EBR-II reactor run 74, because both the PRD and RLR were judged to be high during that run. This report describes the efforts to develop a realistic model explaining the reactivity observations for run 74 and presents recommendations for additional diagnostic information in the event of a recurrence of off-normal behavior of reactivity.

Examination and Evaluation of in-Reactor Fracture of Shroud Tubes in Mixed-Oxide Fuel Experiment X159

Description: During disassembly and subsequent visual examinations of X159 (a Mark A-19A type of subassembly containing mixed-oxide fuel), 11 of 19 shroud tubes were found fully or partially severed. Several of the capsules within their shroud tubes were distinctly kinked at axial locations near those at which the shroud tubes were severed. The examination also disclosed that the shroud-tube fractures occurred during reactor operations.

Reactivity and Power Shape Control : Theory and Numerical Applications

Description: An optimization method, based on linear programming, has been developed which determines the enrichment distribution in a multizone reactor such that the desired power distribution is achieved at BOL, as well as the poison distribution during reactor operation such that the reactor is kept critical and the desired power distribution is retained. For the numerical implementation of the method, the CYPRUS code has been written. Results of the application of the method are presented and input spec… more

Tutorial on the Warren Abstract Machine for Computational Logic

Description: Tutorial description of the Warren machine with a basic introduction to the motivation of the machine and the instructions that define it. Discussion of the fairly limited extensions required to extend the machine for more general use outside of implementations of logic programming. Substantial speedups will occur due to improvements in the implementation of the basic algorithms.

A Summary on Experimental Methods for Statistical Transient Analysis of Two-Phase Gas-Liquid Flow

Description: Much work has been done in the study of two-phase gas-liquid flows. Although it has been recognized superficially that such flows are not homogeneous in general, little attention has been paid to the inherent discreteness of the two-phase systems. Only relatively recently have fluctuating characteristics of two-phase flows been studied in detail. As a result, new experimental devices and techniques have been developed for use in measuring quantities previously ignored. This report reviews and s… more

Fuel Dynamics Loss-of-Flow Test L3 : Final Report

Description: The behavior of FTR-type, mixed-oxide, pre-irradiated, ''intermediate-power-structure'' fuel during a simulation of an FTR loss-of-flow accident was studied in the Mark-IIA integral TREAT loop. Analysis of the data reported here leads to a postulated scenario (sequence and timing) of events in the test. This scenario is presented, together with the calculated timing of events obtained by use of the SAS code.

Theory of Ionization by Electron Collisions

Description: The problem of calculating comprehensive sets of cross sections for ionization of atoms and molecules is reviewed. Emphasis is put on targets that are already ionized and lower-energy collisions for which the incident electron must be treated on a par with target electrons. The physical circumstances are discussed in which perturbation methods should be adequate, and special investigations are recommended to identify the relevant ranges of parameters more precisely and dependably. A new R-matri… more

Fluid Forces on Two Circular Cylinders in Crossflow

Description: Fluid excitation forces are measured in a water loop for two circular cylinders arranged in tandem and normal to flow. The Strouhal number and fluctuating drag and lift coefficients for both cylinders are presented for various spacings and incoming flow conditions. Results show the effects of Reynolds number, pitch ratio, and upstream turbulence on the fluid excitation forces.

Flight Tests of Modifications to Improve the Aileron Control Characteristics of a North American XP-51 Airplane (AC No. 41-38)

Description: Investigations were undertaken to improve the ailerons of a P-51 fighter so as to obtain greater effectiveness without increasing the stick forces. Modifications consisted of increasing the deflection range of the aileron to 70 percent and changing the original concave section to a thick section with beveled trailing edge. Results of the modified ailerons showed an increase in effectiveness over the original aileron of 70 percent at low speed and 55 percent at high speeds.

An approximate spin design criterion for monoplanes

Description: "A quantitative criterion of merit has been needed to assist airplane designers to incorporate satisfactory spinning characteristics into new designs. An approximate empirical criterion, based on the projected side area and the mass distribution of the airplane, has been formulated in a recent British report. In the present paper, the British results have been analyzed and applied to American designs. A simpler design criterion based solely on the type and the dimensions of the tail, has been d… more

Wibault Two-Seat Monoplane 8C2: An All-Metal Pursuit and Observation Airplane

Description: Michel Wibault's two seat monoplane 8C2, is similar to the Parasol pursuit monoplane which preceded it. It has no perishable parts in its structure and needs no special storage or coverings. The sample aeroplane uses a 500 HP Hispano-Suiza engine but can accept a 400-600HP engine from a variety of manufacturers with little difficulty. It uses a two blade tractor propeller.
