Army Gas-Cooled Reactor Systems program: alternator final design report

Description: The development and testing of a demonstration brushless alternator for the ML-1 mobile nuclear power plant is described. The brushless concept was selected after it became apparent that a conventional power generator could not satisfy the ML-1 weight and size requirements. The demonstration alternator fabricated and tested under this program did not meet all performance specifications; the efficiency was low and the unit could not be operated for significant periods of time without overheating… more

THE STRUCTURE OF THE SO-CALLED ''ETHYLMETAPHOSPHATE'' (LANGHELDESTER)

Description: Phosphorus pentoxide reacts with ether to form bicyclo-tetraphosphate ester (II), cyclotetraphosphate ester (III), isocyclotetraphosphate ester (IV), and tetraphosphate ester (V). Phosphorus n.m.r. measurements show the content of the mixtures. The so-called 'ethyl metaphosphate' (Langheld ester) is a mixture of III (50% to 45%), IV (36% to 25%), and V (14% to 30%).

POLARIZATION IN PROTON-PROTON SCATTERING USING A POLARIZED TARGET.Part I. 0.330 to 0.740 GeV Part II 1.70 to 6.15 GeV

Description: Using the Berkeley polarized-proton target, we have measured the polarization parameter P({theta}) for proton-proton (p-p) scattering. The measurements were obtained at beam kinetic energies of 0.330, 0.680, and 0.740 GeV at the 184-in. synchrocyclotron and 1.70, 2.85, 3.50, 4.00, 5.05, and 6.15 GeV at the Bevatron. The angular regions measured were from 20 to 100 degrees center of mass; the square of the four-momentum transfer ranged from 0.1 to 0.8 (GeV/c){sup 2}.

Fallout concentrations of 12 radionuclides in air: 1962 through mid-1964

Description: Newly developed multidimensional gamma-ray spectrometric counting techniques permit the direct measurement of twelve fallout radionuclides on air filters. Observed concentrations of Be{sup 7}, Na{sub 22}, Mn{sup 54}, Co{sup 60}, Y{sup 88}, Zr{sub 95}Nb{sup 95}, Ru{sup 106}, Sb{sup 124}, Sb{sup 125}, Cs{sup 134}, Cs{sup 137} and Ce{sup 144} during the past two and a half years help explain the origin and fallout rates of the trace radionuclides in air. 14 refs., 1 tab.

Technical note on results of production test IP-628-AI: Crosstie flow test and flushing calibration, and the earlier production tests IP-573-AI and IP-499-AI

Description: A series of three experimental tests was conducted on the operation and adequacy of the K-Reactors` third, or last-ditch, cooling system. The first test showed considerable line corrosion the second test was performed directly after line cleaning, and the third test showed a significant amount of additional line corrosion after only nine months of service. The present cooling adequacy of this last-ditch system at the KE and KW reactors is summarized these show the power levels for which we have… more

Design criteria for coolant backup three remaining smaller reactors. Revision 1

Description: This document defines the objectives, bases, and functional requirements that shall govern the preparation of design of the coolant backup system for the three remaining smaller reactors. This project will increase the reliability of the coolant backup facility at B Area by providing an independent last-ditch coolant system to B and C Reactors. The reliability of the last-ditch system for D Reactor will also be improved in that the present F and H leg of the export system will no longer be a pa… more

Physics calculations for mixed PuO{sub 2}-UO{sub 2} NPR loadings

Description: At the request of NRD (NPR Physics Subsection) a study was initiated to determine the physics characteristics of various plutonium-uranium composites as fuel for the NPR. From this study, the PuO{sub 2}-UO{sub 2} fuel system was selected to receive major attention. The effect of adding a burnable poison, B-10, in intimate contact with the mixed oxide fuel was also is to be considered. The present report summarizes the results of these investigations.

Fission product ratios of the Purex filter

Description: This report details measurements of fission product ratios which were made an various samples of the Purex canyon exhaust filter to determine the manner and time interval in which the filter became plugged vith foreign material. Results for samples from different levels within the filter bed were compared to investigate accumulation as a function of depth. Strontium-89/strontium-90, Zr-95/Ca-137, Ru-103/Ru-106, and Ce-141/Ce. Pr-144, ratios were determined. These were compared to a constant rat… more

Production test IP-695-A thorium oxide irradiation: K Reactors

Description: Irradiation of thorium for the production of ``clean`` U-233 at HAPO began in CY 1963. Several small-scale tests, involving from gram size quantities up to a few elements, were successfully conducted and the results from these tests, coupled with theoretical predictions, indicated the desirability of further investigation. This test is one of the final steps in the pilot irradiations of ton quantities of thorium oxide target elements. The objectives of this test are to (1) authorize the irradia… more

Fabrication and Properties of Copper-Boron Carbide Control Materials for Phoebus II Reactor

Description: The Phoebus II Reactor required a neutron absorber material for criticality control and a neutron poison material for reducing the flux peak at the forward end of the fuel element. Normal B{sub 4}C was chosen for the neutron absorbing material, and Cu was employed as the matrix.A feasibility study developed procedures for producijg uniform, dense, stable sheet material of Cu-20, 40, and 50 v/o normal B{sub 4}C. The procedures were, with only slight modifications, translated to production operat… more

Impact properties of plutonium 1% gallium alloy

Description: This investigation was undertaken to determine the approximate impact characteristics of delta stabilized plutonium 1% gallium alloy, both at room temperature and at 325{degree}C. The testing done was non-standard, primarily because some approximate information was desired for another purpose and immediately available materials were used. While the results reported herein should be considered preliminary, they clearly depict the ductile impact behavior of this alloy.
