Final report -- IP-153-I, Hagan coagulant aid as a substitute for separan

Description: The demand for filtered water will be increased when I and E slugs are charged into the reactors. Some of the filter plants are near their ultimate capacity. One of the quickest ways of obtaining increased amounts of filtered water for production use is to restore to normal process service certain filters which are now isolated for exclusive drinking water use. These drinking water filters are isolated because the process water filters are being treated with Separans, a material which has not b… more

Production test IP-165-C continuous monitoring of front-to-rear flux balance, Final report

Description: Nuclear reactors which contain a significantly large volume operating at or near the same flux level are subject to oscillations of the maximum flux from one region of the reactor to another. To control these flux movements it is necessary to know the location of the flux ``peaks`` and ``valleys`` and the rate of change of the flux at these points. Existing monitoring instruments readily present only a two-dimensional picture of the flux distribution within the reactor; the front-to-rear distri… more

Preliminary study of the removal and recovery of plutonium from Recuplex process waste

Description: Recent experiments show that soil uptake of plutonium by cation exchange from Recuplex process waste is practically negligible. Additional experiments with synthetic cation exchangers also produced negative results. The plutonium occurs in the form of an anion nitrate complex, precluding the possibility of plutonium removal by cation exchange. As a result, a laboratory investigation was started to determine the effectiveness of synthetic anion exchange resins for removing plutonium from these w… more

Studies of the Behavior of the Tbp-Kerosene Solvent in Uranium Refining: Degradation of the Kerosene Diluent

Description: Extensive studies have been conducted of kerosenetype diluents for the tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP)kerosene solvent used in uranium extraction. Wide variations have been shown in the paraffinic, isoparaffinics aromatics and olefinic hydrocarbon contents of these diluents. Such diluents have been shown to be unstable in thc presence of high nitric acid concentrations, and in the presence of small amounts of nitrous acid. This instability is primarily a function of the non-paraffinic hydrocarbon c… more

A Series of Seven Flowsheet Studies With Nonradive Salt, Volatility Pilot Plant Runs C-9 Through C-15

Description: ABS>A series of seven flowsheet demonstrations of the Volatility Process was performed using nonirradiated material. In this series (a) the Pilot Pland was proven to be operable but not sufficiently reliable for remote operation; (b) the feasibility of a bed of NaF pellets as a trap for Cr aad Zr fluorides was demonstrated; and (c) the most desirable fluorine flow rate for fluorination of molten salt in the existing equipment was determined to be in the range 10 to 30 std. liters per min. INTERIM REPORT ON DEVELOPMENT OF JET PUMP AND SHROUD AS A RECIRCULATION DEVICE WITHIN THE BLANKET OF A TWO REGION REACTOR VESSEL

Description: The feasibility of utilizing a jet pump and a shroud as a recirculation device within the blanket of the proposed reactcr pressure vessel for the HHE-3 was examined A Schute-Koerting designed jet pump was tested in conjunction with a 1/3 scale plastic model consisting of a core vessel, two constant area shrouds, and a blanket vessel. It was concluded that a jet pump with a ;multinozzle in conjunction with a shroud designed with a sizeable annular flow area provides a very satisfactory recircula… more

RESUME OF INFORMATION ON HYDROGEN IN TITANIUM ALLOYS AND ITS IMPLICATIONS TO HRP

Description: A summary is presented of available information on the nature of H embrittlement in Ti, its control, and effects on other Ti properties. Most data also apply to Zr. Types of embrittlement are discussed, along with H sources and effects on mechanical properties. Also, the effects of H on forming heat treatment, and joining are discussed as well as Ti production and processing and methods of H removal. Finally, H in-service pickup is considered, and methods for establishing the extent of this rea… more

Energy Transfer Between Charged Particles by Coulomb Collisions

Description: The theory of energy transfer between charged particles in a fully ionized gas is reviewed, and calculations are made of the rate at which energy is transferred from electrons at a temperature T to cooler ions. The interaction between ion and electron is assumed to be of the Debye form (Ze/r) exp (-r/ lambda ), where lambda is the Debye shielding length. It is suggested that future improvements of the theory of Coulomb interaclions in ionized gases are likely to be made in two ways: through emp… more

Description: Three simultaneous polar-coordinate component equations in an aximuthally homogeneous magnetic field of a cyclotron are integrated by a fixed- point program on the IBM 650 computer to give the orbits of particles in the cyclotron. A regenerator action for extracting particles is computed as an inpulse once each turn as a subprogram when desired. The program is described and instructions for its use are included. (auth)

Annealing of Irradiated Boron Containing Alloys and Dispersions

Description: The interpretation of the dimensional instability of U- Zr alloy containing small amounts of boron has raised the question of whether the observed low-temperature swelling can be related to the temperatureswelling characteristics of either the U-Zr alloy or Zr- B alloys by themselves. To obtain such information on the Zr--B system to compare with the more detailed study of thc alloy early results of which were reported in KAPL-1562, pieces of previously irradiated Zr- B alloys and dispersions w… more

MIXING RATES BETWEEN THE HRT HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEMS

Description: Transient effects of making step changes of the core dump tank concentration are studied for single-region operation of the Homogeneous Reactor Test. It is assumed that the feed and the letdown streams are only between the core high-pressure system and the core dump tanks, and that transfer of fuel to or from the blanket can only be made through the core high pressure system. Transfer rates between the HRT highpressure systems of 75 to 100 lb/min will give reasonable mixing times, about 4 hours… more

Gas Cooled Power Reactor Coolant Choice

Description: The current status of helium and carbon dioxide technology is described in the light of the Gas Cooled Reactor Program requiremoents. The problem of containing high-pressure helium at high temperature is discussed, and it is concluded that, by proper attention to the design, construction and maintenance of a plant, a high degree of helium leak-tightness can be achieved at small additional cost when compared with a carbon dioxide system. What is more, the cost of making up helium losses in a pra… more

SUPPLEMENTARY COMMENTS TO ORNL CF-58-5-97

Description: ABS>In a previous report (ORNL CF 58-5-97) the temperature structure in the GCR-2 fuel elements and coolant steam was presented. The analysis depended on several assumptions, two of which were more controversial than the others. One was the stipulation that the ''equilibrium'' temperature profile (i.e., a temperature profile that did not change with axial location) had been achieved at the cross section being studied. The other simplifica
