Urine Analysis for Tritium Oxide

Description: This report analyzes a procedure based on the production of acetylene from the active water, with subsequent measurement of the ionization caused by the tritium beta particle. This eliminates the troublesome absorption on the chamber walls when hydrogen is used, and provides a rapid method for the preparation of the urine samples.

The Identification and Determination of Trace Amounts of Rare Earth Elements in Graphite by Neutron Activation

Description: Abstract: "A method is described for the identification and quantitative determination of trace amounts of rare earths in graphite by measurement of the energies and decays of the activities induced by neutron irradiation. The specific rare earth elements identified are europium and samarium. During the development of this method, the half-lives of Eu-152 and Sm-153 were determined. These are reported as 9.32 +/- 0.04 hours and 46.34 +/- 0.23 respectively."

Effect of Temperature on Beta-Ray Measurements

Description: Summary: "This report investigates photographic methods of measuring beta radiation and includes a study of temperature effects on these measurements. Experimental data are submitted to show that an increase in film temperature before and during beta irradiation causes a definite increase in density for the same dosage. Recommendations drawn from experience gained in the experimental works are offered."

Density and Viscosity of Solutions in the Tributyl Phosphate Process for Uranium Recovery

Description: The following report discusses the presentation of preliminary density and viscosity data which may explain whether higher viscosities of the Deo Base-TBP systems, and a change in density differences between the two phases will lead to unsatisfactory column operation.

Fabrication of Uranium Wire

Description: From abstract: "The present report describes experimental work performed to establish a procedure for the production of uranium metal wire. In all cases, the size of the initial rod was 1/2 inch diameter. Three materials were used: hot extruded tuballoy rod, high purity cast tuballoy rod, and cast U-235 rod."

A Microdetermination of Uranium by Ferric Sulfate Titration

Description: Abstract: "Following nitrate removal by means of a three-stage hydrochloric acid digestion, uranium was reduced with chromous sulfate reagent. In an inert atmosphere, the quadrivalent uranium was titrated at 80-95[degrees] with standard ferric sulfate solution. The end point was obtained with a potentiometric cell including a platinum in-titrant reference electrode and a platinum indicator electrode. Application was made to various low leverl uranium solutions. For samples containing 1 - 12 mil… more

The Critical Mass of a Spherical Reactor with Variable Intrinsic Buckling

Description: Abstract: "The critical mass both of an untamped and water-tamped sphere with parabolic radial variation of the intrinsic buckling is calculated by a perturbation method. The result is applied to finding the minimum critical mass of plutonium in water suspension with infinite water temper; the calculations show that the minimum critical mass at constant concentration may be reduced by an amount of the order of 7.6% when the concentration of plutonium is permitted to vary throughout the suspensi… more

Determination of Organic Acids in Process Solutions

Description: Abstract: "A method has been established for the estimation of volatile organic acids in aqueous process solutions containing UNH, nitric acid, ANN, sodium dichromate and small amounts of hexone. The practice is to distill a 400 ul or 500 ul sample in the presence of an excess of phosphoric acid and ferrous sulfate under a high vacuum; a special apparatus utilizing a receiver cooled with a dry ice-isopropanol mixture is employed. The distillate is taken up in isopropanol and then titrated poten… more
