Kinetics of the radiation-induced exchange reactions of H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/: a review

Description: Mixtures of H/sub 2/--T/sub 2/ or D/sub 2/--T/sub 2/ will exchange to produce HT or DT due to catalysis by the tritium ..beta.. particle. The kinetics of the reaction D/sub 2/ + T/sub 2/ = 2DT may play an important role in designing liquid or solid targets of D/sub 2/--DT--T/sub 2/ for implosion fusion, and distillation schemes for tritium cleanup systems in fusion reactors. Accordingly, we have critically reviewed the literature for information on the kinetics and mechanism of radiation-induce… more

Introduction to albedo neutron dosimeters

Description: The design, operation, calibration, and performance of albedo neutron dosimeters are discussed. An albedo neutron dosimeter is designed to measure the flux of thermal neutrons which leave the body when a person is exposed to fast energy neutrons. The fast neutrons are scattered and moderated in the body, and many have lost most of their initial energy and emerge as thermal neutrons. The albedo neutron dosimeter is designed to detect this flux of thermal neutrons by using a thermal neutron detec… more

Logistics models for the transportation of radioactive waste and spent fuel

Description: Mathematical modeling of the logistics of waste shipment is an effective way to provide input to program planning and long-range waste management. Several logistics models have been developed for use in parametric studies, contingency planning, and management of transportation networks. These models allow the determination of shipping schedules, optimal routes, probable transportation modes, minimal costs, minimal personnel exposure, minimal transportation equipment, etc. Such information will … more

Tapered fluidized-bed bioreactor: an improved device for continuous cultivation

Description: The bioreactor concept utilizing a tapered fluidized bed has shown considerable promise for use in bioprocesses where the biological agents can be immobilized on a fluidizable solid phase, but the operating characteristics of such a reactor are not yet fully understood. A simple mathematical model (steady state, plug flow conditions) has been developed and tested with experimental data, and calculated values compare favorably with experimental values. A more complete and presumably more valid m… more

Development and testing of shingle-type solar cell modules. Quarterly report No. 2

Description: The details of a shingle module design which produces in excess of 97 watts/m/sup 2/ of module area at 1 kW/m/sup 2/ insolation and at 60/sup 0/C are reported. This selected design employs a tempered glass coverplate to provide the primary solar cell structural support. The use of the B.F. Ultrasonic inspection techniques for two weld closures proposed for RSSF waste storage casks

Description: One method being considered for interim storage of high-level radioactive waste materials is to place these materials in large sealed stainless steel canisters and subsequently store these canisters in a second sealed steel storage cask. Weld procedures are proposed as the closure or seal for these vessels. Inspection of these closures to assure initial and long-term integrity of the closure welds presents a challenge to nondestructive testing. The environment is thermally (400 to 1000/sup 0/F)… more

Anion exchange of 58 elements in hydrobromic acid and in hydriodic acid

Description: Anion exchange distributions of 58 elements have been measured from 0.1-8.7M HBr and from 0.1-7.4M HI onto three strong-base resins, 8 and 4% cross-linked and macroporous. Data were obtained by 16- to 18-h dynamic batch contacts. Anion exchange in these media is compared to that in HCl. The effect of resin cross-linkage is considerably greater in HI media than in HBr and HCl media. Examples are presented of potentially useful separations using HBr and HI media alone and in combination with HCl.

Cementitious yttria products

Description: An investigation has been made of the physical properties and formation conditions of cements formed in the yttria/salt/water system. Cementitious binders were of the nominal Y/sub 2/(OH)/sub 5/X.H/sub 2/O type (where X represents the Cl/sup -/ or NO/sub 3//sup -/). An ammonium nitrate-produced yttria cement was shown to be sinterable and was demonstrated to form very refractory castable concretes with zirconia or alumina aggregates.

Experiments with a lime slurry in a stirred tank for the fixation of carbon-14-contaminated CO/sub 2/ from simulated HTGR fuel reprocessing off-gas

Description: The fixation of CO/sub 2/ with a lime slurry in a stirred tank reactor appears to be feasible. The rate of reaction is fast, and virtually complete removal of CO/sub 2/ can be attained. At a gas residence time of <1 min, the decontamination factor (DF) is >100 in a single stage reactor for CO/sub 2/ concentrations ranging from 5 to 100%. It has been determined that two-stage contacting sequences which result in a cumulative DF > 10/sup 4/ are feasible. The reaction rate is constant up … more

Presence of UV-endonuclease sensitive sites in daughter DNA of UV-irradiated mammalian cells. [3H-thymidine tracer]

Description: Asynchronous Chinese hamster cells were irradiated with 10 Jm/sup -2/ uv radiation and 0.25 to 4 hours later pulse-labeled with (/sup 3/H)thymidine. Cells synchronized by shaking off mitotic and G/sub 1/ cells were irradiated in either the G/sub 1/-phase or S-phase of the cell cycle and pulse-labeled with (/sup 3/H)thymidine in the S-phase. After a 12 to 14 hour chase in unlabeled medium, the DNA was extracted, incubated with Micrococcus luteus uv-endonuclease and sedimented in alkaline sucrose… more

Experimental investigation of the chemistry of excited states of rare gases. First quarterly progress report, October 15, 1977--January 15, 1978

Description: The quenching of XeF(B) was studied using the steady-state photolysis of XeF/sub 2/ as the source of XeF(B). The product states from the sensitized reaction of Xe(/sup 3/P/sub 1/) with Cl/sub 2/ and COCl/sub 2/ also were studied. The new XeF(B) quenching rate constants are described. The pulsed laser induced fluorescence technique was used to measure radiative lifetimes and two-body quenching rate constant (with Ar) for the low energy Xe(6p)* states. Serious signal/noise problems for the lowest… more

Current control by a homopolar machine with moving brushes

Description: The equation for TNS Doublet's E-coil circuit with moving brush homopolar machine is integrated in the flux of the homopolar for a monotonically increasing current function extending beyond the current reversal into the burn period. The results show that the moving brush feature is not useful for controlling the burn.

Array automated assembly: Phase 2. Quarterly report

Description: An analysis was made of cost trade-offs for shaping modified square wafers from cylindrical crystals. For reasonably expectable silicon and sheet costs, the optimum shape will be nearer a circle than a square. Tests were conducted of the effectiveness of texture etching for removal of surface damage on sawed wafers. Four glass systems have survived preliminary screening tests for use as edge masking dielectrics. These include beta-spodumen, MgO-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ borosilicate, baria and titania … more

Electron-beam fusion welding of beryllium

Description: Ingot-sheet beryllium (Be) having three different chemistries and three different thicknesses was fusion-welded by the electron-beam process. Several different preheats were used to obtain 100% penetration and crack-free welds. Cracking susceptability was found to be related to aluminum (Al) content; the higher Al-content material was most susceptable. However, adequate preheat allowed full penetration and crack-free welds to be made in all materials tested. The effect of a post-weld heat treat… more
