Mark I 1/5-scale boiling water reactor pressure suppression experiment facility report

Description: An accurate Mark I /sup 1///sub 5/-scale, boiling water reactor (BWR), pressure suppression facility was designed and constructed at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLL) in 11 months. Twenty-seven air tests using the facility are described. Cost was minimized by utilizing equipment borrowed from other LLL programs. Shiva automatic alignment systems: a brief description

Description: A diagram is given of the basic Shiva alignment system. The alignment requirements, as originally specified and as preseently estimated, together with the performance obtained to date from the prototype equipment are described. It is expected that this performance will be satisfactory for even the most alignment-sensitive targets and significantly better than is needed for experiments not requiring highly uniform illumination. The hardware arrangement planned for a typical Shiva chain is shown.

Computing the effect of plastic deformation of piping on pressure transient propagation. [LMFBR]

Description: The computer program PTA-1 performs pressure-transient analysis of large piping networks using the one-dimensional method of characteristics applied to a fluid-hammer formulation. The effect of elastic-plastic deformation of piping on pulse propagation is included in the computation. Neutron and gamma transport effects by heterogeneous core designs. [LMFBR]

Description: The use of diffusion theory for the prediction of power production near a reactor core-blanket interface and the assumption that gammas are absorbed in situ can lead to substantial errors. This is primarily due to the breakdown of Fick's law for neutron diffusion near the core-blanket boundary, and the gamma leakage from the core into the blanket. Optimal Linfinity estimates for some Galerkin methods for the Dirichlet problem

Description: Optimal L/sup infinity/ error estimates are established for a few different finite-element-type methods for the Dirichlet problem in a bounded domain. The methods are selected so as to avoid the necessity of imposing boundary conditions on the trial functions, usually difficult in practice. Three specific methods are treated. Planning for the next generation of standard electronics

Description: Recommendations of a committee for a new standard to meet needs of new high-energy physics experiments are summarized in a nontechnical manner. Existing standards, including CAMAC, were examined; it was felt that none would meet the future needs of high-energy physics. The original committee gave its recommendations and disbanded. Cryogenic recovery analysis of forced flow supercritical helium cooled superconductors

Description: A coupled heat conduction and fluid flow method of solution was presented for cryogenic stability analysis of cabled composite superconductors of large scale magnetic coils. The coils are cooled by forced flow supercritical helium in parallel flow channels. Anaerobic fermentation of simulated in-situ oil shale retort water

Description: The feasibility of removing soluble organics from oil shale retort water by anaerobic digestion with methane production was experimentally investigated. The following conclusions were made. The retort water studied had to be pretreated to remove toxic and add deficient constituents before it could be successfully treated with the anaerobic fermentation process. General Atomic reprocessing pilot plant: description and results of initial testing

Description: In June 1976 General Atomic completed the construction of a reprocessing head-end cold pilot plant.
