A Proposed Particle Containment Device

Description: Abstract: A device is proposed for confining charged particles to a localized region of space by means of the alternating electric field of a resonant cavity. The motion of single electrons in the field is stable. The limitations to particle density and temperature are discussed, and found to be too severe to allow the device to serve as a reactor, although it might be a useful laboratory tool.

Energy Transfer Between Modified Maxwell Distributions

Description: Abstract: "A particularly conventional modified form of Maxwell distribution is chosen. The modified expressions for (a) the energy transfer from the ions to the electrons in a plasma and (b) the brehmestrahlung from the electrons are calculated. Using the expressions some possible steady-state conditions for the ion and electron gases are derived and compared with those for the usual Maxwell distributions."

The Application of Pulsed Neutron Sources to Criticality Measurements

Description: Abstract: Experimentally measured promp-neutron decay constants for sub-critical systems are of considerable value as normalization data for calculations of prompt-neutron time constants. A method of measuring these decay constants with a pulsed neutron source, neutron detector and multi-channel time-delay analyzer has been developed and used on a number of fast-spectrum subcritical systems. An analysis of this method based on the one-energy group, one-delayed-neutron group reactor kinetic equa… more

Beehive and Hornet : Reactor Codes for Spherical Geometry

Description: Abstract: Beehive is a five energy group, two region, time independent spherical reactor code. It considers the problem of reactor system in which the core material is assumed to be at a higher energy (temperature) than the reflector material. The code obtains a closed solution for the critical reactor assembly by a procedure which is a logical extension of normal two group theory. The companion code, Hornet, computes the neutron fluxes for the critical assembly determined by the Beehive calcul… more

A High-Current Radio-Frequency Ion Accellerator

Description: Abstract: "A radio-frequency ion accelerator is described which is capable of continuous currents of protons of 250 ma at an energy of 500 kev. The beam is less than 3 in. in diameter and has a divergence of less than 2 degree half angle. Operation of the machine accelerating deuterons to an energy of 1000 kev is also described."

A Description of a Shock Wave in Free Particle Hydrodynamics with Internal Magnetic Fields

Description: Abstract: "The structure of an extremely strong magnetohydrodynamic shock is discussed in the limit of no particle collisions. It is tentatively concluded that the shock transition takes place through the mechanism of a strong electric field produced by charge separation. The pressure in the shocked plasma is due primarily to a very high electron temperature. The ions, on the other hand, undergo an irreversible temperature change of only 3."

Microwave Diagnostics for High-Temperature Plasmas

Description: This report presents the high-temperature plasma research, aimed mainly toward controlled thermonuclear reactions, that have been greatly facilitated by the development of a number of microwave diagnostics, based on previous plasma microwave studies but mostly on ideas generated at UCRL in conjunction with the AEC Project Sherwood.

Results of Beam Inflection Tests

Description: "An experimental study has been made regarding the passage of a beam of 100-kV ions (H⁺ and H₂⁺) across a magnetic field by means of a crossed electric field." This experiment was designed to answer the following questions: "(1) Is there a limit to the current that will traverse a magnetic field by the action of a crossed electric field? If so, what is the limit? (2) Do difficulties arise in maintaining the electric field? (3) For the source employed, what is the angular divergence and current … more
