Jurassic (Bathonian and Callovian) Ammonites in Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho

Description: From abstract: Jurassic ammonites of late Bathonian to middle Callovian Age have been found in 12,000-13,000 feet (3,660-3,960 m) of strata exposed in the area near and south of Izee and Seneca in east-central Oregon. Ammonites of early Callovian Age and possibly also late Bathonian Age occur in several hundred feet of black shale exposed along Dennett Creek near Mineral, Idaho. Early Callovian ammonites also occur in similar black shale exposed on the Oregon side of Snake River Canyon about 32… more

The Sorting and Deposition of Allochthonous Plant Material in a Modern Environment at Silwood Lake, Silwood Park, Berkshire, England

Description: Abstract: Quantitative statistical sampling of plant debris entombed within deltaic sediments of a Holocene fluviolacustrine environment at Silwood Lake, Berkshire, demonstrates that patterns of deposition exist that can be used to reconstruct the relative spatial distributions of species within the source vegetation.

Research in the Geysers-Clear Lake Geothermal Area, Northern California

Description: From abstract: The Geysers-Clear Lake geothermal area lies within the central belt of the Franciscan assemblage in northern California. The structure of this terrane is characterized by northeast-dipping imbricate thrust slices that have been warped and cut by steeply dipping strike-slip and normal faults. Introduction of magma into the crust beneath the Geysers-Clear Lake area can be related to eastsoutheast extension accompanying northward propagation of the San Andreas transform system betwe… more

Tectonics of Southeastern Arizona

Description: From abstract: The part of Arizona south and east of Tucson is underlain by a wide assortment of deformed rocks, as well as by some major mineralized districts. A synthesis of the tectonic evolution of the region is offered in this report, which is based on older studies of mining districts and on more recent field studies by students and by the U.S. Geological Survey, augmented by field review and selective remapping of many key areas. Through this synthesis the rocks of the region are seen to… more

Hydrogeology of the Buffalo Aquifer, Clay and Wilkin Counties, West-Central Minnesota

Description: From introduction: The objective of this study are to (1) determine the areal extent and thickness of the Buffalo aquifer and the general occurrence of deeply buried aquifers, (2) determine the potential for development of water supplies from wells in the Buffalo aquifer, (3) investigate and discuss annual recharge to the Buffalo aquifer and the potential for artificially recharging the aquifer, (4) determine the chemical quality of water in the aquifer and in area streams, (5) establish a netw… more

Assessment of Water Quality in Streams Draining Coal-Producing Areas in Ohio

Description: From introduction: In 1975 a project was begun to provide information on several aspects of coal hydrology in Ohio. The first phase was a reconnaissance of water-quality conditions in coal-mining regions. Phase one had two primary objectives; to document the occurrence of certain inorganic and organic constituents in waters of the coal-mining regions and to determine if the concentrations of those constituents were related to coal mining. The second phase of the project was a more detailed stu… more

Borehole Data-Collection Methods Applicable for the Regional Observation and Monitor Well Program, Southwest Florida Water Management District

Description: From introduction: This report presents some borehole data-collection methods that can be used during the drilling of ROMP or other wells where data collection is a prime objective. Hydraulic, water-quality, and geophysical data-collection methods applicable to the hydrogeology of west-central Florida are emphasized.

Relationship of Water Quality of Hudson River, New York, During Peak Discharges to Geologic Characteristics of Contributing Subbasins

Description: From abstract: "Water samples from two Hudson River floods in 1977--one originating mainly in shale sub-basins that produce high sediment loads, the other in soil-poor, crystalline rock terrane that yields little sediment--were analyzed to evaluate the relationship of iron, manganese, lead, phosphorous, and polychloride biphenyle (PCB's) to suspend-sediment concentration."

Effects of Coal Fly-Ash Disposal on Water Quality in and Around the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Indiana

Description: Abstract: Dissolved constituents in seepage from fly-ash settling ponds bordering part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (the Lakeshore) have increased trace elements, and gross alpha and gross beta radioactivity in the ground water and surface water downgradient from the settling ponds. Data suggest that concentrations of some dissolved trace elements may be greater beneath interdunal pond 2 than in the pond. The soil system downgradient from the settling ponds seems to have affected the… more

Water Use in Ohio 1975

Description: From introduction: This report summarizes estimates of Ohio water use for 1975. These figures are revisions of data which were compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Circular, "Estimated Water Use in the United States, 1975" (Murray and Reeves, 1976). In that circular, water-use figures were aggregated for the state of Ohio as a whole, and for the U.S. Water Resources Council's Great Lakes and Ohio River hydrologic regions.

Water Quality of Alignment, Farquar, and Long Lakes in Apple Valley, Minnesota

Description: Abstract: Alimagnet, Farquar, and Long Lakes, in Apple Valley, Minnesota, were sampled from 1973-79 to determine their physical and chemical characteristics. A storm-sewer inlet to Alimagnet Lake was also sampled during two storms in 1978. The 1976-77 drought caused a more noticeable effect on the quality of the lakes than any other factor. Chloride concentrations were 10 to 15 milligrams per liter before the drought, but increased 2 to 4 times during the drought. Dissolved solids reacted simil… more
