Progress Report on Refining of MgX and Other Uranium-Bearing Materials

Description: Abstract: "The effects of acidity on extraction of vanadium and molybdenum by diethyl ether are described. Solubility data for several vanadium compounds in nitrate process solutions are presented. Preliminary results on the extraction of uranium from process slurries by tributyl phosphate are reported, including data on the contaminants extracted with the uranium."

Progress Report on Refining of MgX and Other Uranium-Bearing Materials

Description: From abstract: "Results of tests investigating the effects of feed and scrub acidities on the extraction of uranium and contaminants from process slurries by tributyl phosphate-Gulfspray Naphtha in a Scheibel continuous extractor are described. Studies on the fractional precipitation of MgX from a dilute sulfuric acid system throw considerable light on the probable constitution of MgX. Further data on the effect of acidity on the extraction of molybdenum and vanadium into ethyl ether are presen… more

Filters in P-10 production hoods

Description: This paper addresses the reported problem of insufficient air flow through the Fiberglas filters for the air inlets in P-10 production hoods. Since it appears that the replacement of the contemplated filters with either louvers or grilles will not impose any forseen difficulties and will definitely assist in the ventilation design, this substitution has been accepted. Air flow through the grilles or louvers is to be designed to attain a minimum lineal velocity of 200 fpm through the openings.

Report for General Research July 10 to October 2, 1950 (Supporting Research Volume)

Description: The efficient prosecution of the research and process development on polonium, radium, actinium, waste disposal, and alpha-neutron sources requires the use of a wide variety of instrumental techniques such as: alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron counters and survey meters; emission, absorption, and mass spectroscopy: x-ray and electron diffraction; microbalances; and calorimeters. The complex and kaleidoscopic aspects of our research program require; (1) The application of standard instruments and … more

The occurrence of plutonium in nature

Description: Plutonium has been chemically separated from seven different ores and the ratios of plutonium to uranium determined. This ratio was found to be fairly constant in pitchblende and monazite ores, in which the uranium content varied from 50% t o 0.24%, and substantially less in carnotite and fergusonite.

Spontaneous Fission

Description: The first attempt to discover spontaneous fission in uranium was made by Libby, who, however, failed to detect it on account of the smallness of effect. In 1940, Petrzhak and Flerov, using more sensitive methods, discovered spontaneous fission in uranium and gave some rough estimates of the spontaneous fission decay constant of this substance. Subsequently, extensive experimental work on the subject has been performed by several investigators and will be quoted in the various sections. Bohr and… more

Engineering Study of Evaporation for Concentrating Radioactive Liquid Wastes : Engineering Research Final Report

Description: Summary: "The problem of evaporation of secondary radioactive wastes resulting from waste disposal studies at Mound Laboratoy has been studied experimentally to determine the fundamental design characteristics of a plant size unit. Emphasis, of course, was on decontamination, but the factors affecting foaming and scaling also had to be investigated and evaluated. Generally speaking, the final design is a standard type of evaporator, the only unique feature being the relation of the two effects.… more
