Supplement to Comparison of Automatic Control Systems

Description: "This analysis deals with the indirect regulator, wherefrom the behavior of the direct regulator is deduced as a limiting case. The prime mover is looked upon as "independent of the load": a change in the adjusting power (to be applied) for the control link (as, for example, in relation to the adjusting path (eta) with pressure valves or the rudder of vessels) does not modify the actions of the prime mover. Mass forces and friction are discounted; "clearance" also is discounted in the transmiss… more

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Control-Surface Characteristics 3: A Small Aerodynamic Balance of Various Nose Shapes Used With a 30-Percent-Chord Flap on an NACA 0009 Airfoil

Description: Report presenting tests in the 4- by 6-foot vertical wind tunnel of an NACA 0009 airfoil with a 30-percent-chord flap with a small amount of aerodynamic balance. In the investigation, the effect of balance nose shape and gap at the nose of the flap has been determined. The results indicate that, in general, the lift effectiveness of the flap was unaffected by the addition of a small amount of aerodynamic overhang, and the balance effectiveness of the flap was increased.

Wind-tunnel investigation of control-surface characteristics II : a large aerodynamic balance of various nose shapes with a 30-percent-chord flap on an NACA 0009 airfoil

Description: Report presenting testing of an NACA 0009 airfoil with a 30-percent-chord flap with a 49.5-percent flap-chord balance with various nose shapes and two gaps. The results indicated that the flap is overbalanced when deflected, regardless of nose shape. Results regarding lift, hinge moment of flap, drag, pitching moment, and effect of differential balancing tab are provided.

Wind-tunnel investigation of a section of the horizontal tail surface for the Bell XP-63 airplane

Description: Report presenting force tests conducted on a model of a section of the XP-63 horizontal tail surface in the 4- by 6-foot closed-throat vertical wing tunnel. The angle-of-attack range was from the negative to the positive stall for all flap deflections.

Static Characteristics of Curtiss Propellers Having Different Blade Sections

Description: Report presenting static tests on four full-scale two-bladed propellers differing only in blade sections at blade angles from 0 to 20 degrees at the three-quarters radius. Two of the propellers were also tested as three-bladed propellers. For all of the propellers tested, the highest value of the static thrust figure of merit occurred at a tip-speed ratio between 0.7 and 0.9; the highest efficiency in flight may be expected in the same range of tip-speed ratios.

Wind-Tunnel Tests of Four Curtiss Propellers Embodying Different Blade Sections

Description: Tests of four 10-foot propellers were made in the propeller-research tunnel for the Army Air Corps to check flight and static thrust test results made on several propellers embodying Clark Y and modified NACA 16-series sections. These propellers were identical as to diameter and activity factor and very closely identical in thickness ratio and pitch distribution. The blades embodied sections with both single- and double-cambered Clark Y, modified NACA 16-series, and a combination of Clark Y and… more

The aerodynamics of a wind-tunnel fan

Description: From Introduction: "This paper deals only with the aerodynamics of the fan proper and demonstrates the manner in which the radial distribution of axial velocity of fluid through a fan is governed by geometry of the fan itself."

Comparison of stress-strain curves obtained by single-thickness and pack methods

Description: Report presenting an apparatus for supporting a single thickness of sheet against buckling so that its compressive yield strength can be determined by the single-thickness method. The results of testing are compared with those from two other methods. This method results in substantial cost savings as compared to the pack method.

Some comparative tests of plain and alclad 24S-T sheet

Description: Report presenting comparative data on the behavior of plain and alclad 24S-T sheet under several types of structural loading. Results indicated that as far as flexural stiffness and resistance to buckling are concerned, the effect of the soft protective coating on alclad shoot is equivalent to a reduction in thickness of about 7 percent. Results regarding the tensile and compressive properties of materials, bending tests on single thicknesses of sheet, column tests on single thicknesses of shee… more

Tandem Air Propellers - 2

Description: Report presenting testing of three-blade, adjustable-pitch counterrotating tandem model propellers adjusted to absorb equal power at maximum efficiency of the combination. The aerodynamic characteristics were determined for a variety of blade-angle settings and diameter spacings. At maximum efficiency, the tandem propellers absorb about double the power of the three-blade propellers and about 8 percent more power than six-blade propellers with the pitch of the forward propeller of the tandem co… more

Power-on wind-tunnel tests of the 1/8-scale model of the Brewster F2A airplane with full-span slotted flaps

Description: "At the request of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department, tests were made in the 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel of the 1/8-scale model of the Brewster F2A airplane with full-span slotted flaps. The object of the tests was to determine the power-on static lateral and longitudinal stability of the complete model with a new wing which had a full-span slotted flap and a plain and slot-lip aileron for lateral control" (p. 1).

The Experimental Preparation of Earth Pigments of Denton County, Texas

Description: This study is a report of the results of a series of experiments, the purposes of which were to determine: (1) what natural pigments are available in Denton County, Texas, (2) the variety, quality, and quantity of the native pigments as compared with standard commercial pigments, and (3) the suitability of these native pigments for use in the preparation of artists' colors. Since the chief interest was in the specific hues, their quality and variety, the factor of commercial possibilities was n… more

The Development of an Original Composition

Description: the problem was to take a group of poems from a work entitled The Dark Land, by Kathleen Tankersley Young, and set them to music in such a manner as to produce a unified, artistic, whole, A string quartet was chosen as an accompanying group because of a desire to produce a work comparable in scope and seriousness of content to a piece of chamber music.

Developing and Evaluating a Course in Crafts in a Small School

Description: The purpose of this study is to find and evaluate a course in crafts in a small rural school with the hope that it may be of some value to teachers in rural districts, and that it may help provide a more general education for the rural school child. The results of an interest questionnaire, projects suggested by the students, projects made, and direct observations will be the means used in determining the needs and interests of the Waneta School students. A comparison of suggested projects and … more

Symphony No. I, "An American Symphony"

Description: In Symphony No.I, the form of the first movement follows the broad outlines of the sonata. The second movement is in Rondo form, the first section of which has a definite ABA character, the second part has but a single theme extended in treatment, and the third section a recapitulation of the first. The final movement again uses the ABA form.
