Peeler Extraction of a Synchrocyclotron Beam

Description: This report follows the study of a perturbation in the fringing magnetic field of a synchrocyclotron, using the computed unperturbed orbits of the modified Berkeley 184-inch synchrocyclotron, and introduces the peeler extraction to overcome limitations by using a perturbation that recedes with increasing radial amplitude.

The Reactions of Mixed Crystals of Rare Earth Fluorides With Fluorine Gas

Description: Thesis discussing the reactions of mixed crystals of rare earth fluorides with fluorine gas. The reactions were "studied gravimetrically by determining the weight increases of mixed tetrafluoride samples upon exposure to fluorine at a pressure of 1 atmosphere and a temperature of 250°C...The nature of the phases produced upon fluorination was studied by x-ray diffraction methods."

Particle Trajectories in Homogeneous Magnetic Field with Linear Time Dependence

Description: Abstract: "Formulas are derived for the trajectory of a charged particle in a magnetic field which is a linear function of time. Graphs of certain functions are presented, by means of which a trajectory with given initial position and velocity may be plotted."

Utilization of the Surface Tension of Liquid Metals in Making High-Vacuum Seals

Description: Abstract: "The free energy (surface tension) of a liquid film can withstand atmospheric pressure across a maximum theoretical gap of 10-(-3) cm between solids if the liquid wets and bridges the sides of the gap continuously. The eutectic alloy of Ga, lm and Sm is used for this purpose. This alloy is molten at room temperature with surface tension > 500 dynes/cm, vapor pressure < 10-(-8) cm at 500 C and excellent wetting properties. This alloy can be utilized in valves, motion seals, flanged joi… more

Energetic Neutral Injection into Thermonuclear Machines

Description: Abstract: "A scheme is discussed in which D+ ions would be accelerated to about 100 kev in a conventional accelerator, then be sent through a gas target frmo which about half the ions would emerge neutral with very little scattering or energy loss; the neutral beam would then cross into a magnetic field and part of the atoms would be ionized and trapped by colliding with the already trapped ions. The smallest mirror machine with a central field of 30-40 kilogauss, 2;1 mirror ratio and β = 01 to… more

Note on Table Top Injection : High Energy Injection Inside the Mirrors

Description: "High energy injection into Table Top is discussed for the case in which the ion sources are to be located inside the mirrors in the mirror region. Two typical ion source geometries are considered. maximum time intervals available for injection indicated are on the order of 7 to 25 microseconds."

The Reaction Al²⁷(p,3pn)Na²⁴

Description: Abstract: "The cross section for the reaction Al²⁷(p,3pn)Na²⁴ has been measured for proton energies between 30 and 350 Mev relative to the cross section for the reaction C12(p,3pn)C11, and the absolute magnitude determined by matching with data measured with a Faraday cup at 350 Mev and at 31.5 Mev."

Gamma Rays from Inelastic Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons on Pb²⁰⁸

Description: Abstract: "The cross section for the production of 2.61-Mev gamma rays from the Pb-208(n, n')Pb-208* reaction has been measured for five different angles from 50 to 130 degrees. The angular distribution appears to be isotropic within the precision of the experiments, and leads to an integrated cross section of 25.5 +/- 4.6 millibarns."

Electronic Engineering Design Problems in Fusion Research

Description: Abstract: "Design problems peculiar to fusion research are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of large energy storage systems, transfer of and utilization of this energy. In addition, design criteria for delay systems, data reduction systems, and other problems related to our fusion research program are discussed."

Transistor Driven Beam Switching Tube Decade Counter

Description: Abstract: "This paper describes an electrical readout, decade counter employing the magnetron beam switching tube with transistor drive. Double pulse resolution is one microsecond. The unit will accept a variety of transistor types and will tolerate supply voltage variations of +/- 20% at ambient temperatures up to 60 C. A "Pixie" neon indicator is driven without the use of additional transistors. A readout circuit for printer on punched paper tape is presented."

Hydromagnetic Stability of a Diffuse Linear Pinch

Description: Abstract: "The hydromagnetic energy principle is applied to the derivation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the hydromagnetic stability of a linear pinch with distributed plasma current (a diffuse linear pinch). The results are quite general in that the axial and azimuthal components of the magnetic field, which determines the structure of the pinch completely, are treated as arbitrary functions of distance from the axis. For purpose of illustration, the general results are applied to… more

Cyclotron resonance absorption by a hydrogen plasma

Description: From introduction: "The work described in this report was undertaken as part of an experimental study to determine the effectiveness of radiofrequency field in heating the ions of a hydrogen or deuterium plasma. The ultimate aim is to find a method of heating a deuterium plasma until an appreciable rate of nuclear reaction takes place."
