PREFERENTIAL INHIBITION OF THE GROWTH OF VIRUS-TRANSFORMED CELLS IN CULTURE BY RIFAZONE-82, A NEW RIFAMYCIN DERIVATIVE

Description: Rifazone-8{sub 2} (R-8{sub 2}), a new rifamycin derivative, is shown to preferentially inhibit the growth of virus-transformed chick cells in culture. Macromolecular synthesis and glucose uptake of transformed cells are also appreciably decreased in the presence of low concentrations of R-8{sub 2} where the normal cells appear unaffected. While R-8{sub 2} is shown to be a selective inhibitor of RNA-directed DNA polymerase in vitro, its action on the growth of transformed cells may involve some … more

Emitted and decayed values of radionuclides in gaseous wastes discharged to the atmosphere from the separation facilities through calendar year 1972

Description: Gaseous wastes from the chemical separations processing of spent reactor fuel elements and product finishing operations have been discharged to the atmosphere since 1944. Data on plutonium, beta, iodine, and uranium emissions for the twenty-nine years are provided. The known radioactivity in gaseous wastes and estimated radioactivity in gaseous waste where prime data were not available are presented. Emission data are not included on gaseous wastes emitted from 200 Area facilities which are now… more

Estimates o the risks associated with dam failure

Description: The probabilities and potential consequences of dam failure in California, primarily due to large earthquakes, was estimated, taking as examples eleven dams having a relatively large population downstream. Mortalities in the event of dam failure range from 11,000 to 260,000, while damage to property may be as high as $720 million. It was assumed that an intensity IX or X earthquake (on the Modified Mercalli Scale) would be sufficient to completely fail earthen dams. Predictions of dam failure w… more

Metallization and photolithographic processes and procedures for MC2730 RTG thermopile intraconnections

Description: Processes and procedures were developed for applying the thin film tungsten electrical intraconnections to the MC2730 RTG ''one-dimensional'' thermopile. After polishing, the surface to be metallized was cleaned with a detergent/organic solvent procedure and then etched with hydrofluoric acid to minimize the oxide. Tungsten contacts were sputtered onto the thermopile and the individual contacts photolithographically defined using a negative acting photoresist in conjunction with a potassium fer… more

Dynamic response of a linear elastic/linear strain-hardening thin ring. [LMFBR type reactors]

Description: In studying the dynamic response of fluid filled cylindrical shells to large internal pressure pulses, it would be advantageous to have a rapid method of computing the final deformed shape of the shell. In treating the dynamic response of liquid metal heat transport system to pressures generated by large sodium/water reactions, determinations of the structural response of various components is only a fraction of the information required to describe the entire event. The problem treated in this … more

Fundamentals of the KRAKEN code. [Eulerian hydrodynamics code for compressible nonviscous flow of several fluids in two-dimensional (axially symmetric) region]

Description: KRAKEN is an Eulerian hydrodynamics code capable of treating compressible nonviscous flow of several fluids in a two-dimensional (axially symmetric) region. In many respects it is reminiscent of the FLIC/PIC methods, although it is considerably different in detail. Both Lagrangian and advection (transport) phases of the problem are considered. The code has a straight-forward approach to differencing. The presently used version of the code is discussed; it is hoped that a more efficient version … more

Information recovery from high-speed silver halide emulsions containing CRT traces after exposure to nuclear gamma radiation

Description: A data recovery problem often occurs in nuclear tests when photographic film used to record CRT traces is unavoidably exposed fo gamma rays before it can be retrieved for developing. Studies made to improve recovery of the CRT data from such film are described. Best results were obtained with a procedure involving reversal processing, silver intensification, dye-coupling development, and duplication. (auth)
