Trip Report, December 16--21, 1949

Description: December 16--20, 1949 were spent in inspection of the equipment of the Naval Pilot Channel Test Rig at the Oak Ridge pile, observation of its maintenance and use, and in discussions with the test operating personnel, and members of the H.P. and pile operating divisions. December 21 was spent at the Argonne National Laboratories, Naval Reactor Division, in inspection of the test rig under construction for use at the H pile. Dr. Etherington requested that I express their desire to arrange that an… more

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis VI.

Description: This paper is a compilation of the essential results of our experimental work in the determination of the path of carbon in photosynthesis. There are discussions of the dark fixation of photosynthesis and methods of separation and identification including paper chromatography and radioautography. The definition of the path of carbon in photosynthesis by the distribution of radioactivity Within the compounds is described.

Nomograms for Obtaining the Compound Composition of Hydrated Limes from the Oxide Analysis

Description: Report with two nomograms presented for rapidly obtaining the compound composition of hydrated limes from the oxide analysis. The general nomogram can be applied to any commercial hydrated lime and gives values accurate to within 0.3 percent while the special nomogram is applicable only to regularly hydrated and highly hydrated dolomitic limes and is accurate to within 0.1 percent.

Spin-Tunnel Investigation of the Jettisoning of External Fuel Tanks in Spins

Description: "A spin-tunnel investigation has been made to determine the probability of external fuel tanks striking an airplane after being jettisoned in a spin. The investigation showed that for straight-wing fighter-type designs in any case in which jettisoning of tanks in a spin might aid spin recovery the tanks would probably clear all parts of the airplane" (p. 1).

The aerodynamic characteristics throughout the subsonic speed range of a thin, sharp-edged horizontal tail of aspect ratio 4 equipped with a constant-chord elevator

Description: From Introduction: "Recent investigations have indicated several wing plan forms, wing sections, and wing-body-tail combinations suitable for flight at supersonic speeds. One such lifting surface, a thin, sharp-edged without sweep of aspect ratio 4 and taper ratio 0.5, has been the subject of an investigation in the Ames 12-foot pressure wind tunnel. The aim of the investigation was to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of such a wing plan form throughout the range of subsonic Mach numbe… more

Effect of tunnel configuration and testing technique on cascade performance

Description: "An investigation has been conducted to determine the influence of aspect ratio, boundary-layer control by means of slots and porous surfaces, Reynolds number, and tunnel end-wall condition upon the performance of airfoils in cascades. A representative compressor-blade section (the NACA 65-(12)(10) of aspect ratios of 1, 2, and 4 has been tested at low speeds in cascades with solid and with porous side walls. Two-dimensional flow was established in porous-wall cascades of each of the three aspe… more

Equations of State of Elements Based on the Generalized Fermi-Thomas Theory

Description: The Fermi-Thomas model has been used to derive the equation of state of matter at high pressures and at various temperatures. Calculations have been carried out both without and with the exchange terms. Discussion of similarity transformations lead to the virial theorem and to correlation of solutions for different Z-values.
