Description: Neptunium distribution coefficients from acid nitrate, chloride, and sulfate solutions by several organic nitiogen and phosphorus compounds were measured as functions of several extraction variables, including neptunium valence, acid and salt concentration, and reagent concentration. Notes on Luminosity Variation at ISABELLE

Description: In the present ISABELLE design, the luminosity at each insertion will be the same, unless special efforts are taken to get a low-..beta.. insertion or reduced crossing angle. These can only change the luminosity by factors of 2 to 4 from insertion to insertion. An estimation of the range of desired luminosities is given.

Civilian Power Reactor Program. Part III. Status Report on Large (100 and 300 MWe) Heavy Water-Moderated Power Reactors--as of 1960

Description: An evaluation of 300- and 100-Mwe power plants was conducted using ground rules prescribed by the USAEC for this study. Costs corresponding to two average discharged fuel burnups are: 8.6 mills/kwh (8500 Mwd/ metric ton) and 8.8 mills/kwh (7500 Mwd/metric ton) for the 300-Mw plant. Costs for the 100 Mw plant are 14.7 mills/kwh for an average discharged fuel burnup of 6010 Mwd/metric ton. Low Temperature Thermoluminescence of Gamma Irradiated Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate

Description: Thermoluminescence in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) induced by Co/ sup 60/ gamma irradiation at liquid nitrogen temperature (-198 deg C) was investigated. Glow curves in the temperature range --196 to 0 deg C were measured for a series of gamma exposure dosages ranging from 10/sup 4/ roentgen to 5 x 10/sup 6/ roentgen. Establishment and maintenance of a coal sample bank and data base

Description: During the current reporting period a total of 139 samples (46 DOE Sample Bank samples and 93 other Penn State samples) of various sizes were distributed. Sixty-three of the samples were distributed to DOE or its contractors; 76 were distributed to other agencies. A total of 88 data printouts were distributed. Superconductor development program at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

Description: Winding of a Nb--Ti test coil at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory is nearly complete. The conductor in this coil operates in a maximum field of 7.5 T and provides the 2-T field required by the Mirror Fusion Test Facility. Nb/sub 3/Sn multifilamentary conductors, made using the ''bronze'' technique, appear capable of providing the higher fields needed by commercial reactors.

Establishment and maintenance of a coal sample bank and data base. [Including sample preparation without oxidation]

Description: Retrieval of 5-lb splits of -1/4 inch coal from designated 30-gallon drums was completed. Preparation and analysis of these samples for the second yearly quality evaluation is in progress. After consultation with the DOE Project Manager, two replacement samples were collected. INFLUENCE OF RADIATION FROM AN UNSHIELDED REACTOR ON A NATURAL MICROFLORA

Description: The soil microflora and its respiratory activity were measured in soil cores collected at different distances from an unshielded reactor. No direct correlation was found between dose received and microbial counts or respiration. Ground wave propagation of a video pulse source: Part 2

Description: In a previous paper we developed a simple model describing the far-field from a video-pulse source near the ground and for grazing incidence. We report here on a recent field test in which we attempted to verify the model. Our results show quantitative agreement with the model for most of the tested parameter space. Fluidized bed incineration process design for transuranic waste

Description: A fluidized bed incineration facility has been installed at the Rocky Flats Plant to develop and demonstrate a process for the combustion of transuranic waste. The unit's capacity is about 82 kg/hr of combustible solid waste, which is nine times higher than the rate for the operating pilot-scale unit.
