THE HEAT CAPACITY OF U$sub 3$O$sub 8$ POWDER AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE (400-1800 F)

Description: The mean heat capacity of a sample of powdered U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ was determined as a function of temperature from measurements of heat content. A thin-walled nickel capsule containing the material was heated in an electric furnace and dropped into a water calorimeter The Mean heat capacity values calculated from the experimental data were nearly constant over the temperature range, room temperture to 250-975 deg C (482-1790 deg F). The average value was 0.074 plus or minus 0.004 cal gm/sup -1EDE… more

Circumventing chloride ion trouble Columbia River water

Description: This report contains data acquired during sampling of the Columbia River water on March 26, 1945. Topics of discussion include; the elevation of chlorine levels from 4 ppm to 20 ppm, what steps should be taken to remediate the problem, and the various processes that were taken into consideration for the clean up of this chlorine. Separation processes considered include; ion exchange, distillation, precipitation, heat exchange, and recirculation through a cooling tower.

Explosives TNX Technical Division, Hanford weekly report for period ending July 25, 1944

Description: Progress on finding suitable water conditions for start-up had been approached as closely as possible with our present equipment and information as to the requirements. The water composition should be attainable that is not corrosive or build up a film rapidly, and we have means available for removal of such films. Slug classification methods were analyzed from a dimensional standpoint. Analysis of current CMX data was undertaken with the objective of establishing allowable variations in pressu… more

Production test-105-55-P -- Reactivity of the B Pile under shutdown conditions. Interim report

Description: At the shutdown of the B Pile, 269 active tubes were discharged and ten poison columns were charged. As a result, the pile was let considerably below critical. The present test described in this report was set up to develop methods of detecting possible changes in reactivity by periodic measurements of neutron flux in the shutdown pile. The irradiation of indium foils in an empty process tube was found to provide a satisfactory method of monitoring the shutdown pile, and was sensitive than the … more

A Note on the Kinetics of Homogeneous Piles

Description: Abstract. In investigating stability of a homogeneous pile it has been customary to assume that the production of bubbles follows the production of power instantaneously. Here we investigate the implications of introduction of an intermediate dissolved gas stage under two hypotheses on the formation of bubbles from this dissolved gas. It is seen that this additional stage tends to make the pile unstable.
