Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry Quantification of ¹³C-Labeling in Sugars

Description: This article describes a new methodology for monitoring sucrose labeling using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). To date, the most commonly used method to monitor sucrose labeling is by nuclear magnetic resonance, which requires substantial amounts of biological sample.

Mental Illness and Youth-Onset Homelessness: A Retrospective Study among Adults Experiencing Homelessness

Description: This article retrospectively evaluating the association between the timing of homelessness onset (youth versus adult) and mental illness as a reason for homelessness among homeless adults living in homeless shelters and/or receiving services from homeless-serving agencies in Texas and Oklahoma. A better understanding of these relationships could inform needs for early interventions and/or better prepare agencies that serve at-risk youth to address precursors to youth homelessness.

Underlying Ossification Phenotype in a Murine Model of Metastatic Synovial Sarcoma

Description: This article presents the analysis of genetic mouse models of synovial sarcoma to determine the extent of ossification in the tumors and its relationship with morbidity. The authors noted higher ossification within their metastatic mouse model of synovial sarcoma. Their conclusion is that both metastasis and ossification are dependent on time, but that they are independent of one another.

Prolate and oblate chiral liquid crystal spheroids

Description: Article examining the palette of morphologies that arises when microdroplets are deformed into nonspherical shapes in a controllable manner. Specifically, geometrical confinement and mechanical strain are used to manipulate orientational order, phase transitions, and topological defects that arise in chiral liquid crystal droplets. The reported structures and assemblies offer potential for applications in smart coatings, smart fabrics, and wearable sensors.

Evidence of Endozoochory in Upland Geese Chloephaga picta and White-Bellied Seedsnipes Attagis malouinus in Sub-Antarctic Chile

Description: This article evaluates the role of endozoochory in herbivorous and sympatric bird species in sub-Antarctic Chile. The authors hypothesize that fragments of bryophyte gametophytes retrieved from their feces are viable and capable of regenerating new plant tissue. This relationship may have important implications in the way bryophytes disperse and colonize habitats facing climate change.
