Scoping Report on Various Salt Mines in the United States

Description: One of the most important factors in isolating the demonstration waste storage site is an adequate number of shafts to insure proper ventilation. Proper ventilation will require that the air exhausted from the storage area pass directly to the upcast air shaft. Those mines reported by this scoping contract generally conform with the two shafts per mine requirement of MESA. Three of the mines reported on have more than two shafts. Several of the mines can have additional shafts drilled in time t… more

Effects of energy related activities on the plankton of the Chesapeake Bay. Section 1. Progress report, 1 August 1976--30 September 1977

Description: Progress is reported on a comprehensive study of the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay estuary system. Emphasis is placed on seasonal variations of initial energy fixation by phytoplankton primary producers and subsequent energy transfer to herbivours and becterial heterotrophs. The impact of chemical and radioactive effluents from electric power plants on the ecology of Chesapeake Bay will be assessed. Data are included on the role of plankton metabolism in regenerating nutrients, nutrient exchang… more

Neutron diffraction study of magnetic order in the ternary superconductor ErMo/sub 6/Se/sub 8/

Description: Synthesis of new classes of ternary superconducting materials has led to compounds which also show a strong tendency toward magnetic order when one of the constituent elements is a rare earth. Powder neutron diffraction data on superconducting (T/sub s/ approximately 6 K) samples of ErMo/sub 6/Se/sub 8/ taken in the temperature range 0.05 to 2.0 K show that magnetic Bragg peaks develop at T/sub M/ = 1.1 K, in agreement with specific heat studies. However, it is not possible to index these new r… more

Analysis of homogeneous U233 and U235 critical assemblies with ENDF/B-IV data (AWBA development program)

Description: Thirty-two U233 and U235 homogeneous aqueous critical experiments were analyzed with ENDF/B-IV data. Calculated eigenvalues for both fuel types increased by nearly 2 percent over the range of hydrogen/uranium atomic ratio covered (from 2106 to 27.1). This is attributed mostly to an underprediction of fast leakage, with some contribution from the fission and capture resonance integrals of ENDF/B-IV U235. Eigenvalue sensitivities to several nuclear data changes were examined. Values of the therma… more

Susceptibility of unirradiated recrystallized Zircaloy-4 tubing to stress corrosion cracking

Description: Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in unirradiated recrystallized Zircaloy-4 internally pressurized tubing specimens in atmospheres containing iodine vapor, cesium, or combinations of iodine and cesium is evaluated experimentally in terms of the effects of internal surface flaw morphology, iodine and cesium concentrations, tubing hydrogen content, test temperature, and test atmosphere water vapor content on the time to failure. The iodine vapor SCC data are analyzed in the framework of a fracture … more

Stria

Description: Recording of John Chowning's Stria. The work uses the processes of computer synthesis to precisely control the spectral components - the partials - of sound. A non-tonal division of the frequency space is based on the golden ratio which is also used to determine relationships between inharmonic spectral components. Chowning received one of the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music's (IRCAM) first commissions to compose a piece for the first series of concerts of the Institu… more

Ludus Sinteticus

Description: Recording of Iván Patachich's Ludus Sinteticus. This composition includes synthetic sounds and contains nine part of form that contrast in atmosphere and construction to each other. Two fundamental structures characterize the composition: a successively built block of clusters and a kind of percussion-rhythmic structure.

Concertante

Description: Recording of Samuel Headrick's Concertante for Violoncello and Magnetic Tape. It is aggressive and decisive in nature with sections that emerge from and evolve into one another, giving the piece a feeling of inevitability. The title describes the concert-piece in which both instruments are used in virtuosic solo capacities. It was inspired by Brahms's Symphony Number One, First Movement and Alfred Lord Tennyson's "Ulysses."

Merchants

Description: Recording of Mark Schubert's Merchants. This piece is a progression from single isolated events to total unification of all sounds. The method of doing so involved simple mixings of the different sounds (first individually presented), extending the events with loops, rapidly splicing different timbres together, and finally using tape echo, blending all the sounds into a climactic ending.

Lyric Density I

Description: Recording of James Needles's Lyric Density I. This piece is the first in a series of three works which explore the development of density from a steady-state sound into a more defined lyric and linear statement. In this initial movement, short and abrupt crescendos promote areas of high attack density often veiled by a continuous foreground or background sound.

GAM 77

Description: Recording of Raoul de Smet's GAM 77. It is a work based on concrete sound material, specifically a cookware set on which the composer improvised. In the studio, the sounds were kneaded and transformed until it reached a sound comparable to gamelan. The title refers to it and when one reads the English title ("game"), it refers at the same time to the composer's activity. As soon as the material was fixed, it was organized in canon three voices. GAM 77 was realized at the Institute for Systemati… more

Ever-Livin' Rhythm

Description: Recording of Neil Rolnick's "Ever-Livin' Rhythm." All of the sound material comes from fragments of African music taken mostly from field recordings of music of the BaBenzele pygmies of Central Africa, which was then transcribed by Rolnick. The rhythmic drive of the piece is similar to the kind of infectious music which has come out of the African diaspora. The computer part was realized on a mainframe computer which would calculate the batch files, which is an aspect that endures in Rolnick's … more

Liège à Paris

Description: Recording of Henri Pousseur's Liège à Paris for tape. The preposition "à" refers to several possible verbs: first, Liège thinks of Paris, and his first way of expressing it is to go there in a fictitious way, to play to visit it, to be there. So one can perceive that this is not just an illusion, that Liege (just like Geneva or Montreal) is in Paris, in every sense of the word, including that of 'to belong'. All these cities are part of a vast linguistic and cultural fabric, of which Paris is u… more

High-field, high-density tokamak power reactor

Description: A conceptual design of a compact (R/sub 0/ = 6.0 m) high power density (average P/sub f/ = 7.7 MW/m/sup 3/) tokamak demonstration power reactor has been developed. High magnetic field (B/sub t/ = 7.4 T) and moderate elongation (b/a = 1.6) permit operation at the high density (n(0) approximately 5 x 10/sup 14/ cm/sup -3/) needed for ignition in a relatively small plasma, with a spatially-averaged toroidal beta of only 4%. A unique design for the Nb/sub 3/Sn toroidal-field magnet system reduces t… more
