Preliminary Report of the Uranium Favorability of Shear Zones in the Crystalline Rocks of the Southern Appalachians

Description: From summary: Three sheared areas in the crystalline Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces, from which uranium occurrences or anomalous radioactivity have been reported, were studied to determine their favorability for uranium mineralization. The study, which involved a literature review, geologic reconnaissance, ground radiometric surveys, and sampling of rock outcrops for petrographic and chemical analyses, indicates that more-detailed investigations of these and similar areas are warranted.

Uranium in Alkaline Rocks

Description: Report describing the results of a literature search, a limited chemical analytical program, and visits to three alkaline-rock localities intended to establish criteria for determining if a site had uranium resource potential. The criteria were applied to various sites in the U.S.; those results are also reported, with additional information about ongoing study.

Reports on Investigations of Uranium Anomalies

Description: Introduction: The Hylas Zone, a northeast-trending belt of mylonite and ultramylonite, lies in the eastern Piedmont Province of Virginia and borders the northern end of the Richmond Basin (Fig. I-1). The north-trending Richmond Basin is 58 km long and a maximum of 16 km wide. Early indications of anomalous uranium concentrations in the region came from discussions with Jan Krason, GeoExplorers International, Denver, who had worked in the area. Examination of aerial radiometric data (Geodata Int… more

Study to Develop Essential Planning Data for Conterminous U.S. Aerial Radiometric Surveys

Description: From Introduction: "The objective of this study was to present the data in a form readily useful in planning the remainder of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) Program National Aerial Radiometric Reconnaissance Survey and to facilitate planning of similar, more detailed, followup surveys in the conterminous United States. The data are presented on microfiche (in pocket) and in digital form on magnetic tape (obtainable from the DOE computer data base… more

Uranium in Coal

Description: Introduction: Anticipated uranium requirements of nuclear power plants have prompted many organizations to examine the possibility of recovering uranium from low-grade sources such as shale, phosphate, sea water, and coal. Coal has generated special interest because some uranium was recovered from uranium-bearing carbonaceous rock in the mid-1960s. About 5,000 samples of coal have been analyzed for uranium by the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Bureau of Mines, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, U.S. … more

Geology and Recognition Criteria for Veinlike Uranium Deposits of the Lower to Middle Proterozoic Unconformity and Strata-Related Types: Final Report

Description: From synopsis: The discovery of the Rabbit Lake deposit, Saskatchewan, in 1968 and the East Alligator Rivers district, Northern Territory, Australia, in 1970 established the Lower-Middle Proterozoic veinlike-type deposits as one of the major types of uranium deposits. The term "veinlike" is used herein for this type of deposit in order to distinguish it from the classical magmatic-hydrothermal "vein" or "veintype" deposits. The veinlike deposits exhibit distinct geologic features and are now kn… more

Precambrian uranium-bearing quartz-pebble conglomerates: exploration model and United States resource potential

Description: From Introduction: "Uranium has been discovered in fluvial quartz-pebble conglomerates in most of the Precambrian shield areas of the world, including the Canadian, African, South America, Indian, Baltic, and Australian shields. Occurrences in these and other areas are shown in Figure 1.1. Two of these occurrences, the Huronian supergroup of Canada and the Witwatersrand deposit of South Africa contain 20-30 percent of the planet's known uranium reserves (Nininger, 1974). Thus it is critical tha… more

Uranium in Granites From the Southwestern United States: Actinide Parent-Daughter Systems, Sites and Mobilization: First Year Report

Description: From summary: In this first annual report for subcontract BFEC 79-384-E (Uranium in Granites of Southwestern North America) we have established the general geological and geochemical background for our investigations. We describe the regional setting and some important geochemical patterns, constituting a major uranium anomaly, of the Precambrian basement in the Colorado Plateau region. Three of our investigated samples were derived from a portion of this region in central and northern Arizona.… more
