White Nights

Description: The source material for White Night consists of digital delay processing of spoken names or portions of names of fellow artists. These fragments set up micro-rhythms which interlock, then slowly shift phase. Because the source fragments are essentially static in regard to texture, pitch and timbre, the composition is built on subtle rhythmic interactions among combinations of fragments, with amplitude and density determining the overall structure. Whitewash

Description: Recording of Paul Koonce's Whitewash. This work was created using the CMUSIC sound-synthesis language running on a NeXT computer. The source sounds for the work consist of two piano tones (one low, another high) and a contrasting granularly synthesized chord sound. The three sounds form the basis for development that uses successive granular processing to transform and fuse earlier sounds and gestures into incarnations of new character, depth and speed.

Whorl

Description: Recording of Frederick Szymanski's Whorl. This work is an homage to Iannis Xenakis' Persepolis and was composed as a contribution to Asphodel's Persepolis remix project. The composer used the remastered version of the piece and transformed it through an analysis of the sonorities while preserving the intensity of the original piece's texture. Whorl also includes new material derived from the composer's exploration of synthesis.
