Analysis of Field Compaction Data: Report 2, Littleville Dam, Westfield River, Massachusetts

Description: Summary: This report is a review of the materials, specifications, procedures, equipment, and testing pertinent to construction and compaction control of the earth-fill embankment of Littleville Dam, Westfield River, Mass., constructed by the U. S. Army Engineer Division, New England.

Bath Shield Material Development

Description: The development of the manufacturing process and the materials properties of recent BATH (baron-aluminum-aluminum-titanium hydride) round bar stock are discussed. Conventional extrusion of powder metallurgical compacts of the component powders is shown to be a practical process for producing BATH shield material which meets the program objectives for mechanical and physical properties. Optimum extrusion variables are listed.

Chondrococcus columnaris disease of fishes: Influence of Columbia River fish ladders

Description: Mortalities in salmonid populations induced by Chondrococcus columnaris are usually associated with warm river water temperatures. Increasing use of the Columbia River for agriculture, industry and power will introduce additional added heat increments which could result,in additional growth of C. columnaris and proliferation of the disease. It is necessary, therefore, that we examine the existing environmental factors which contribute to the disease in the river. Proliferation and release of C.… more

CPTF Run 4 Flux Monitoring

Description: At the present stage of reactor coolant studies it is possible to say that radiation has an effect on the deposition behavior of corrosion products in the reactor. A quantitative relation between flux ad deposition rate or amount is not available, nor is there information as to exactly which component, or combination thereof, of the radiation is of most importance. To determine these effect conducted and those of other process parameters, Battelle-Northwest (BNW) conducted an experimental progr… more

Detonation sphere. Quarterly report, April--June, 1970

Description: Evaluation of the test data from numerous experiments indicates that large scale calorimeter experimentation in the Pantex detonation sphere is impractical. Detailed quantitative and qualitative measurements of the detonation products will continue to be made to provide data for the evaluation and comparison of explosive performance.

Diffraction Radiation Defocusing of an Electron Ring

Description: The influence upon axial stability in an electron ring of the diffraction radiation reaction force, generated by a ring moving in an acceleration column, is calculated theoretically. A stability criterion is obtained, and numerical examples show that the criterion is not an important constraint upon the choice of parameters or the operation of an electron ring accelerator.

Elastic scattering of the hyperons

Description: We propose to measure the elastic scattering of the hyperons {Eta}{sup -}, {Xi}{sup -}, {Omega}{sup -} and {Lambda}{sup 0} over a region of momentum transfer up to about 1 GeV/c. As part of this program we will measure the production cross sections of the negative and positive hyperons and carry out a search for new particles with lifetime {approx}> 10{sup -11} seconds. This experimental program is based on the use of novel detectors of high spatial resolution which we have developed.

Elastic scattering of the long-lived hadrons

Description: The authors propose to measure the elastic scattering of the charged hadrons {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, p and {bar p} over a region of momentum transfer up to about 1 GeV/c. Special attention will be given to the Coulomb interference region. This experimental program is based on the use of novel detectors of high spatial resolution which we have developed.

ELECTROCHEMISTRY OF EXCITED MOLECULES: PHOTO-ELECTROCHEMICALREACTIONS OF CHLOROPHYLLS. I

Description: Semiconductors with a sufficiently large energy gap, in contact with an electrolyte, can be used as electrodes for the study of electrochemical reactions of excited molecules. The behavior of excited chlorophyll molecules at single crystal ZnO-electrodes has been investigated. These molecules inject electrons from excited levels into the conduction band of the electrode, thus giving rise to an anodic photocurrent. The influence of various agents on this electron transfer has been studied. In th… more

Explosive performance. Quarterly report, January--March, 1970

Description: The objectives of the study are the determination of detonation velocity, shock sensitivity, impact sensitivity, etc.; and the acquisition of high precision one-dimensional hydrodynamic data for use in establishing detonation product equations of state, performance of explosives, etc. A one-inch diameter cylinder test was fired with LX-07-2 Lot HOL 902-1. A wedge test series on LX-07-1 was completed. Shock sensitivity appears to be less than for LX-10-0 but slightly higher than for LX-09-0. One… more

Explosive performance. Quarterly report, July--September, 1970

Description: The objectives of this study are the determination of detonation velocity, shock sensitivity, impact sensitivity, etc.; and the acquisition of high-precision one-dimensional hydrodynamic data for use in establishing detonation product equations-of-state, performance of explosives, etc. A wedge test series was begun on RX-25-AA. This is the first attempt in this work to study a composite explosive with the wedge test. Behavior appears to be quite different from the standard explosives.
