The Aluminum Phosphate Zone in the Peace River Area, Land-Pebble Phosphate Field, Florida

Description: Report discussing information on the aluminum phosphate zone of the Peace River area. At the time of the report, the first plant to treat aluminum phosphate was probably to be located in this area. Information on the geology of the area, weathering/erosion, mineralogy, occurrence and distribution of aluminum, chemical relations and variations of aluminum phosphate, relation of geologic features, mining plans, and tonnage/grade of the zone are included.

Analysis of part-speed operation for high-pressure-ratio multistage axial-flow compressors

Description: From Introduction: "For the analysis reported herein, the same hypothetical 12-stage compressor discussed in reference 6 was chosen, and the effects of inlet-stage stall characteristics and stage interactions were estimated by arbitrary adjustment of the stall characteristics and stage interactions were estimated by arbitrary adjustment of the stalled characteristics of the individual stages."

Application of the mercury-catalyzed aluminum jacket dissolving technique to the Redox process

Description: The possible means of removing aluminum jackets from uranium slugs were considered before Hanford start-up in 1944, and have been considered at other sites for processing other types of slugs. The sodium hydroxide-sodium nitrate dissolution, which served well for Bismuth Phosphate plant operation was accepted for use in the Redox plant. The other means of jacket removal, namely, dissolving the jacket in nitric acid with the aid of mercury as a catalyst, has been adapted for use at Arco and offe… more

An Automatic Polarograph for the Determination of Uranium in Process Waste Streams

Description: The automatic polarograph is ideally suited for the analysis of waste streams for uranium in the Metal Recovery Process, and with modification, it is applicable to other processes, pilot plants, and even to laboratory set ups. The instrument is simple, dependable, and relatively trouble free in operation. It provides an immediate record of the uranium in the waste and, through better control of the process, lower processing costs.

Battelle Memorial Institute trip report, November 1953

Description: The hot pressing die successfully bonded a composite of Ni plate U and Al. A die for step processing is being fabricated. Cu and Mg additions to the AlSi bath lower the dipping temperature but increase intermetallic formation with ductility loss. Optimum dipping rate for continuous AlSi coatings has been established. Extrusion of Al over a cylindrical core was successful. 7.5% Zr-U is not sensitive to oxygen content under crevice corrosion in boiling demineralized water. A method was developed … more

Calculated Lateral Frequency Response and Lateral Oscillatory Characteristics for Several High-Speed Airplanes in Various Flight Conditions

Description: "Calculations have been made to determine the effects of Mach number and altitude on the lateral frequency response, the lateral response to a lateral sinusoidal gust distribution, and the period and damping of the lateral oscillation for the North American F-86A, Grumman F9F-2, Republic F-84, Douglas D-558-II, and Bell X-1 airplanes without autopilots. Aeroelastic and unsteady lift effects have not been included in the calculations and may have a large effect on the results for certain flight … more

Calibration of the Friez Aerovane, Wind Measuring Set AN/GMQ-11

Description: Calibrations of the Friez Aerovane, Wind Measuring Set AN/GMQ-11, manufactured by the Friez Instrument Division of the Bendix Aviation Corporation, were made in the Langley 300 MPH 7- by 10-foot tunnel at the request of the Signal Corps, U, S. Army. Two propellers snd two generators were tested through a speed range of 15 to 190 knots, The results indicated that at airspeeds greater than 80 knots the instrument indicated airspeeds higher than the tunnel airspeed..

Chemical Development, Quarterly Progress Report, July-September, 1953.

Description: Introduction: "During the last quarter, members of the Chemical Development Group have been concerned with six major projects. (1) thermal and radiation properties of organic materials as moderators and coolants, (2) thermal and radiation stability of mirconium hydride, (e) reactor accessibility (transport of radioactive materials in cooling systems, ................. There have been, in addition, a number of smaller service projects, mostly of an analytical nature.:

Comparative Study of Alternative Fibrous Glass and Sand Exhaust Ventilation Air Filter Installations for Purex

Description: Unanticipated radioactive contamination of the 200 Areas environs was discovered in the latter part of 1947, about 2.5 years after the startup of the Bismuth Phosphate Separation Plants. It was subsequently established that this contamination was due to radioactive particles emanating from the Separation Plants' stacks, and the need for exhaust ventilation air filtration equipment was recognized. Sand filters were installed in the fall of 1948 in the ventilation systems of the B and T Bismuth… more

Direct Air Blast Exposure Effects in Animals, Operation Upshot-Knothole, Project 4.2

Description: Project 4.2 was designed to study direct (primary) air blast injury, in animals, from an atomic weapon in the range of 20 to 50 psi under circumstances affording protection against missiles, thermal and ionizing radiation and to estimate the probable direct air blast hazard in man. The pressure levels at which atomic weapons direct air blast injuries occur will determine, to a large extent, the number of blast casualties likely to be encountered. It is probable that fatal overpressures are not … more

The Direct Reading Height Gage and its Applications to Inspection Work : Model 1 and Model 2

Description: The direct reading height gauge is a new and fast operating instrument designed primarily for checking hole patterns, but it can also be used for a number of other purposes as well. This report gives a brief review of what the gauge is, what it will do, and how it is operated. Speed and the elimination of most of the sources of error are its chief attributes.
